NEWS The Battalion I 1.20.15 IN CASE YOU News of note from the break New York officers murdered in the name of Michael Brown: Unrest and violence sparked by the Ferguson shooting of unarmed black teenager Michael Brown continued as two New York police officers were killed in late December. Officers Wenjian Liu and Rafael Ramos were shot and killed while sitting in their car while on duty in Brooklyn. The gunman, Ismaaiyl Brinsley, posted his intentions on Instagram hours before the attack and said it was in the name of Michael Brown's death. The funerals of Officers Liu and Ramos drew hundreds of officers from across the country to the streets of New York to honor their fallen brothers. MISSED IT: Sony hack by North Korea temporarily shuts down "The Interview": NSA agents confirmed that North Korea was behind the Sony Hack, a cyber attack in late November that released sensitive information on Sony employees and upcoming movies. The hack came after U.S.-North Korea tensions rose over "The Interview," a Sony movie that humorously depicts Kim Jong Un's assassination. Because of the attack, Sony temporarily pulled "The Interview" before releasing it online amid outcry from government officials, the public and Hollywood. Unrest in France: France experienced three days of terror, then grief, after gunmen Said and Cherif Kouachi attacked the headquarters of Charlie Hebdo — a satirical newspaper known for its inflammatory content — in Paris. 12 people, including editors, cartoonists and security personnel, were killed. Police tracked down and killed the brothers three days later. A separate gunman stormed a Paris kosher grocery store the same day the Kouachi brothers died, killing four hostages before he was killed by police. All three gunmen claimed to be affiliates of the Islamic State group. ■agt m Disappearance of Air Asia Indonesia flight 8501: Another plane went missing in late December. AirAsia Indonesia flight 8501 was last heard requesting permission to ascend to higher altitude to avoid bad weather. Plane wreckage and bodies were found a few days later in the Java Sea. Analysts are investigating whether or not the crash was an act of terrorism. Measles outbreak: Multiple cases of the measles have been traced back to Disneyland in California. The outbreak continues to spread, and has more than 50 confirmed cases. Presidential health scare: Former President George H.W. Bush spent the holidays in the Houston Methodist Hospital after he was admitted for shortness of breath. Freshman quarterback Kyle Allen was 22-of-35 for 294 yards while Tra Carson rushed for a career- high 133 yards on 25 carries. O Hires, fires and good-byers: A&M head coach Kevin Sumlin was busy over the break tinkering with his staff. Shortly after the LSU loss, Sumlin's defensive coordinator, Mark Snyder, was released from the team. Taking his place will be John Chavis, former conference foe and LSU Tigers DC. Wide receivers coach David Beaty departed for the head coaching job at Kansas. Additionally, offensive line coach B.J. Anderson received the boot. Dave Christensen of Utah was appointed the offensive line coach and running game coordinator while Aaron Moorehead from Virginia Tech will be the wide receivers coach. Still, the most notable move by Sumlin might have been his dismissal of his pool boy via Twitter. Q RIP west side of Kyle Field: After O a season featuring a new East end and video board, Kyle Field will endure one more year of renovations. The West end was imploded on Dec. 21, and the new-and-improved version is scheduled to be ready by the start of the 2015-16 season. /I Basketball success for both i“ teams: Since dropping its first two games of the break to Texas and Washington, the No. 10 women's team has won five of its last six games to move to 16-3. Although the men remain unranked, they caught several eyes across the nation in their 70-64 double-overtime loss to No. 1 Kentucky. The 11-5 Aggies then won consecutive conference games and host the Missouri Tigers at 6 p.m. Wednesday. Tennis started back up: San O Diego played host to the No. 10 Aggie men's tennis team's spring opener for the Morgan Run Tournament Jan. 9-10. They gathered eight wins, and will play LSU, San Diego andTCU Jan. 23-24 in the Mitchell Tennis Center for the ITA Kick-Off Weekend. The No. 10 women's team opens dual meet play at the ITA Kick-Off Weekend Jan. 24-25 along withTCU, Houston and North Texas. ”7 Track is under way: Both track / and fjeld teams began their seasons on Dec. 13 in the Texas A&M Reveille Invitational.
