Aggie football update
By Kyle Davoust
THE BATTALION
In keeping with their injury pol
icy, the Aggies did not release the
status of senior wide receiver Ter
rence Murphy during Tuesday’s
media luncheon. Murphy, the
Aggies' all-time leading receiver,
was injured during the Wyoming
game three weeks ago and has
yetto see game action. If Murphy
is unable to play in Saturday's
game against Kansas State, he
will be replaced in the line-up by
a handful of players, including se
nior Terrence Thomas and junior
DeQawn Mobley.
Adams on defense
Redshirt freshman Jorrie Adams,
who was recruited out of high school
as an offensive tackle, has moved
into the twodeep rotation at defen
sive end. Adams switched to de
fense last spring and has impressed
coaches with his size and quickness
coming off the defensive line.
Return to the 4-3
Fans can expect to see the Ag
gie defense back in its standard
4-3 defensive scheme when it
faces off against Kansas State
on Saturday. A&M was forced to
stay in nickel and dime coverages
for much of the first three games
because of the offensive systems
the team faced. The linebackers
will benefit the most from the
switch, as their playing time will
be significantly increased.
Slowing Sproles
To beat Kansas State, the Ag
gies believe they must contain the
Wildcat's star running back Darren
Sproles. Sproles, who is third on
the Big 12’s all-time rushing list,
drew rave reviews from the Aggies,
even prompting a Barry Sanders
comparison from defensive coordi
nator Carl Torbush.
Texas loses to Angels

Vladimir Guerrero homered twice and drove
five runs while going 4-for-5 and the Ana
heim Angels continued their push in the AL
West with an 8-2 win over the Texas Rangers
Tuesday night.
The Angels never trailed in their fourth straight
win after Guerrero’s two-out solo homer in the
st. It was 8-0 after his 36th homer, a three-run shot in the sixth.
Anaheim (89-68) began the day just a game behind AL West-lead
ing Oakland, which was home against Seattle later Tuesday night.
Rangers (86-71) dropped to three games behind Anaheim with
five games left.
Texas, the surprise contender after four straight last-place finishes, has
lost four of five since sweeping three games from the Athletics last week.
Kelvim Escobar (11-12) allowed just two runs on three hits over
(innings to win for the first time in four starts against Texas this
season. He struck out three and walked one.
Garret Anderson and Dallas McPherson also homered for the An
gels, who have two games left in Texas before a season-ending three-
gameseries in Oakland.
terero, hitting .333 in his first Anaheim season, has 121 RBls
and 120 runs to join Don Baylor as the only Angels with 120 RBIs
and 121 runs in the same season. Baylor was the AL MVP in 1979,
when he drove in 139 runs and scored 120.
The Angels led 1-0 after Guerrero homered in the first off Chan
ho Park (3-7). After Troy Glaus drew a two-out walk in the third,
| Guerrero drove him home with a double.
' Guerrero had a two-out single in the fifth and scored on Ander
son's 14th homer.
McPherson led off the sixth against John Wasdin with his third
homer the only Angels run not scored with two outs. Guerrero hom-
cred again after Chone Figgins singled and Darin Erstad walked.
It was the third multihomer game this season for Guerrero, and 22nd
inhis career. His night at the plate ended with an eighth-inning flyout.
Park, 0-3 with a 6.55 in six September starts, gave up four runs on
six hits over 4 2-3 innings. He walked four.
Escobar was pitching on three days’ rest for the third time in his career.
He had allowed nine earned runs in just 5 1-3 innings combined the first
two times, but had the Rangers mostly befuddled after a leadoff walk.
