World of Tomorrow” is
a cartoon. The sooner au
diences accept that what
they’re watching is an
animated throwback to the
golden age of cinema, the
sooner they can let go and
be sucked into its vortex of
wide-eyed fun.
Though the film’s dia
logue and acting are pitch
perfect throwbacks to the Jays when movies could
be fun without insulting an audience’s intelligence,
“Sky Captain” will be remembered for its visual
technique. Filmed entirely in front of a green screen,
the actors were inserted into a world that first-time
director Kerry Conran and his team of animators
took painstaking details to create. This is a world in
which wonderfully expansive cityscapes fill the
skyline as a lone plane battles with monstrously
rampaging robots.
A combination of “Raiders of the Lost Ark” and
a Fleischer Superman cartoon, the movie features
a world where the plot can take unexpected turns
without the burden of logic and leave the audiences
enjoying the ride every step of the way.
