The Burden
Brothers
"Buried in Your
Black Heart"
Kirtland Records

CARRIE PIERCE
With an assortment of
1990s rockers, including the
lead singer from the Toad
ies, one might wonder how original a band can sound.
However, The Burden Brothers’ debut album, “Bur
ied In Your Black Heart,” manages to mix its veteran
rockers original sounds with an energetic twist.
The Dallas band is led by vocalist Vaden Lewis,
formerly of the Toadies, who, along with drummer
Taz Bentley of Reverend Horton Heat, started the
band by posting music on the Internet and remain
ing low-profile.
“We wanted to put music out over the Internet for
our fans to find,” Bentley said.
The fans sure did find it, and two of its tracks are
now all over the radio. The other members of the band
are bassist Casey Orr of GWAR, guitarist Casey Hess
of Doosu and guitarist Corey Rozzoni. It’s no surprise
these musicians have been doing this for a long time.
Their strong, clean instrumentals and mature sound
drive this album and redefine the mark these musicians
will make on the music scene (and they will be mak
ing their mark on the College Station music scene this
Saturday at Time Square).
After
nan an
ransfer,
The album begins with the album’s namesakeij
which opens with a pop-y guitar beat that is
throughout the song. Lewis’s strong voice
bellows over the chords, setting the pace fort),
of the album. He croons, “Why do I fall forj|
throughout the song, causing one to start ^
the catchy lyrics along with him. The songbecj
slightly angry with, “I think I’m getting illerno#
cry time you come around.”
The second radio release, “Shadow,” includes
lyrics about wanting to follow and watch over
one. Lewis said it was written for his daughter^
does not get to see often. Singing, “1 am the shad
your side/ You know' 1 got to find out? Just whatji
made of,” Lewis perfectly taps into what it’slikei
see your child grow up.
Following is the album’s debut track, “Be; earn is
Night,” which has gotten enough airplay andaccfc he Big
reviews to make it to the rock and alternatived
This catchy track about how all people experiem
same things begins slow and melodically, burstiat
a full-blown rock “n’ roll track.
A favorite of Bentley’s to perform is “Youe
God Damn Beautiful,” which is basically a rod
roll love ballad that any female rock ‘n’ roll fan*
dream of being serenaded with. The lyrics, ho«:
are unoriginal and predictable with “When you!,
me goodbye/You took my heart, tore it apart.”
Never losing its stride. The Burden Brod
debut album resembles the Toadies, withouii
mimicking them. By remaining high-energvi
heartfelt melodies, it’s a good example of ho«
cessful ‘90s musicians can transcend decade/
emerge with a mature sound.
