Young UT receiving corps needs woi
By Jim Vertuno
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
For the past four years, Texas was blessed with
one of the best receiving corps in the country.
Roy Williams, Sloan Thomas and BJ. Johnson
caught dozens of touchdowns and created a lega
cy for the Longhorns’ record book.
If only the future were so bright.
The No. 5 Longhorns (2-0) rank 97th national
ly in passing with 155 yards per game this season
behind a group of new young receivers that coach
Mack Brown says must improve quickly.
The Longhorns play Rice (2-0) Saturday. Then
comes Baylor (1-1) before an Oct. 9 matchup
with No. 2 Oklahoma in Dallas.
“We’re looking hard at the receivers,”
Brown said. “They realize they ha\e
pressure on them.”
That’s a new complaint from Brown.
From 2000 to 2003, Williams virtually^
the school record hook with Texas careens
for receptions (241), yards (3,866) andio
downs (36). Thomas and Johnson bothfe
their careers among the top 10 at Texas. All
are now on NFL rosters.
Replacing them this season are senior
Jeffery, junior Brian Carter, sophomore
Enard and freshman Limas Sweed. Jeffen
31 career catches while the other three have
bined for just seven. Jeffery leads the Lonsii
with seven catches for 44 yards this season.
“Tony Jeffery has been really good. Ev
body else needs improvement,” Brown said

Peterson had
early theory
REDWOOD CITY, Calif.
Scott Peterson offered his own
theory of what happened to his
pregnant wife within 24 hours
of her disappearance, the lead
detective testified Monday at
Peterson’s double-murder trial.
Modesto police Detective
Craig Grogan said the comments
were among several things Pe
terson said and did in the early
days of the investigation that
made him suspicious.
Peterson theorized that Laci
Peterson “had been wearing jew
elry that she inherited from her
grandmother and that he’d seen
her wearing it on that morning,
and when she went into the park
a transient had robbed her,” Gro
gan testified.
Grogan later said police found
in the house all the jewelry Pe
terson said his wife had been
wearing that morning, except for
a pair of diamond earrings.
Grogan conducted a three-
hour, unrecorded interview of
Peterson on Dec. 25, 2003, a
day after Laci Peterson was re
ported missing.
Prosecutors allege Peterson
killed his eight-months-pregnant
wife on or around Dec. 24, 2002,
in their Modesto home, then
dumped her weighted body into
San Francisco Bay.
The remains of Laci Peterson
and her fetus washed up along
a bay shore in April 2003, not
far from where Scott Peterson
launched his boat that Christmas
Eve morning for what he claims
was a solo fishing trip.
Defense lawyers maintain that
someone else killed Laci after
abducting her as she walked the
couple’s dog.
