symptoms and some eventually dying,
Cook said.
“In this exercise they (participants) sit
around a table and go through the process of
how you handle a WMD event,” Cook said.
The full-scale exercise made up the sec
ond part of this practice, Cook said.
“In these, they went through the process
of how they would handle bodies, continue
the investigation of medical symptoms, ad
minister medication and manage all the in
formation they are receiving,” he said.
Gutierrez said volunteers acted the part of
those affected by the bacterial agent.
The emergency personnel then directed
them to the appropriate places, be it hospitals
or a table where someone gave them the ap
propriate medical treatment, Gutierrez said.
“These exercises tested our ability to
handle, say 2,000, people through an infor
mation table and see how many we could
handle per hour,” Gutierrez said.
Sophomore biomedical engineering ma
jor Courtney Scott, a Harris County resident,
said this practice exercise is a smart idea
so the county can be ready in case a WMD
event happens.
“It shows the weaknesses in our system
and how to improve it even though;
might not prevent (an attack),” Scott sai;
Cook said that following the exert
NERRTC works with the participantsto
ate a detailed after action report.
“This includes a detailed overviewo[
scenario, lessons learned, things that,
well and action steps (to be taken) boil
mediately and in the future,” Cook said
Gutierrez said the training was made;
sible by a federal grant through thestat
Texas.
“We knew there was money out the;

need to be able to know in our hearts that we did
our own work when we were in college, and it
should make our degrees even more valuable.”
When the AH SO receives a complaint of cheat
ing, it dispatches two members of the Honor
Council to investigate whether there is sufficient
evidence to hold a hearing. If it is determined
that there is enough evidence for a hearing, then
a panel of students is randomly selected from the
Honor Council to serve as jurors for the hearing. If
a student is convicted of cheating, he will receive
an F* for the course, where the asterisk denotes the
failure was due to academic dishonesty.
“If a student receives an F*, it goes on his per
manent transcript,” said Nicole Bradford, director
of the Honor System Office. “Students have the
opportunity to have the asterisk removed if they
participate in a five-week rehabilitation course
dealing with academic dishonesty and cheating.”
Upon completion of the course, the asterisk is
removed from the transcript, yet the failing grade
remains. If a student is convicted twice of aca
demic dishonesty, he is expelled.
Each Honor Council member undergoes a strin
gent screening and selection process as well as ex
tensive training.
“This is a very prestigious position in the Uni
versity and one that we take very seriously,” Brad
ford said.
Analisa Gisin, a junior political science major,
was one of the few students selected to serve on
the Honor Council this year.
“We applied in April, and we were selected by
the Academic Affairs Committee of the Student
Senate and Dr. Bradford’s Office,” Gisin said.
“We then attended a training day on a Saturday
where we learned how to investigate a complaint,
and learned about the many aspects of academic
integrity and what we would be doing.”
Gisin and her fellow council members listened
to several speakers talk about numerous programs
across the nation at other universities. Following
the speaker, the council members had the oppor
tunity to run through the entire process with a real
case that occurred at another university.
