Every day that a student doesn’t feel like going out and meeting new friends, hundreds of opportunities are missed. You only go to college once, and it just doesn’t seem fair that so many people don’t know how to get involved at Texas A&M, es pecially when the answer isn’t far away. It wasn’t but a few years ago that I arrived at college thinking that I’d have lots of people begging to be my friends, and that I’d go to a different party every night. Obviously, that didn’t happen, and thus- dreams of becoming Van Wilder vanished. 1 wanted to be involved had the energy and ambition — 1 just lacked one thing: confidence. After a few weeks of watching other people join organization came to the realization that 1 either had to take a chance and meets® people or tell my grandchildren about my wild times at college waid ing TV and eating pizza. It was hard to do — making friends u: strangers isn’t exactly my thing. But I had to do it, and eventually (kj My Hall Council came knocking at my door—the one I kept closes to people who advertised events for fear of having to actually nw strangers. I finally decided to open it. I went to the meeting, bee® the Aston Hall RHA delegate, and now I’m the president ofanorgar zation representing about 8,000 people and 28 dorms on campus. It wasn’t easy, but imagine where I’d be if I didn't takeachanc that night. I consider myself to be fortunate, but I also feel forti hundreds of students who haven’t found their niche yet. Theit; hope, however. The best advice I can ofTer is to take a chance, open your door a get involved. Your Hall Council provides a great chance to meetm people and make college worthw hile, and it’s all within your residai: hall. You can get involved in as much or as little as you have timefcftice pres it's not a huge commitment, it’s free, you can join anytime, and you’ vhat his accepted no matter who you are. While some people I knew hatedK >ay child ting dressed up and going to meetings off campus, I loved being to just w alk downstairs and hang out with my friends. aillion. / Ihildren a lardships Ininsured lo means | Thesai las not oi Ind watei It with hi! President amilyjoi [tage. sav But At ji the nat vonder i My favorite part about being involved in my hall and with theRslo try ant ationale Furthe fights of' Tlatform Hiscrimin me Hum: Indjudic dence Hall Association is that though every hall on campus hasai ferent atmosphere, everyone has a bond because they live togetk — they’re friends and neighbors. The people you meet in yourhalh the people w'ho arc going to stick wdth you. This bond is what RR calls the spirit of Aggieland, and the most amazing part about itistki it’s completely free and open to anyone who wants to experience it Of course, there are also other benefits, like gaining experience a having something to put on resumes and scholarship applications, fibortion’ having the ability to talk to the administration and intluence chansijhfrape o on the greatest campus in America. The reason that 1 can look baTagents th at the last few years and be proud of what I’ve done is because I tol Jack of c a chance, got involved, and made my own opportunities. The gtAackfroi thing is that anyone can do the exact same thing just by going to a/fewworld p< Council or to an RHA meeting. I Reme, If you have any doubts whatsoever as to how your social m p- k the party fessional life will turn out in college, just talk to your Hall or your RA. If you don’t know how to get in touch with them, send me an e-mail (michaelpvargo@tamu.edu) or visit the RHA Wei (http://rha.tamu.edu). We’ll be glad to help you enjoy your time ic college, and show you the spirit of Aggieland. govemm about nat An Bush’s qi in the Mil “Undei jovemmt ive,” ao Michael Vargo is RHA />r««fel^ es P onsi and a junior management maf pdininistr 1DD3KILT FALL FANDANGO STARRING PAT GREET ^ longtime is senior FOI WITH PETER DAWSON, HONEYBROWNE, BRANDON RHYDER DJANGO WALKER, RANDY ROGERS, KEVIN FOWLER, LOST TRAILERS, DIERKS BENTLEY, WADE BOWEN & GARY ALU SATURDAY, OCTOBER 16 'Fjrr^rriT Till" MMUiKIlHli pflvinon A NON PROFIT ORGANIZATION o all spt &M an fTexas ponsore thletic nd rival Accon en addre onths h he best; re choo: e felt t ay to p : mphasis ions.
