Garden State: Sounds from
the Motion Picture"
Various Artists
Sony Records
When “Garden State,”
the surprise indie hit flick
of the summer, begins, one
notices something going
on behind the actors: the
music. With an incred
ible compilation of indie
songs mixed with some
fairly well-known oldies,
writer, director and star
Zack Braff was able to do
something not many filmmakers can accomplish:
Putting together a soundtrack of movies not in
spired by the film, but that inspire the film. Every
song complements the images on the screen and
makes them that much more powerful, making the
music an integral part of the film.
“Essentially, I made a mix CD with all of the
music that I felt was scoring my life at the time
I was writing the screenplay,” Braff, who plays
Andrew Bargeman in “Garden State,” said during
a press conference after the film’s release.
The music works wonderfully into the film,
making the emotions seem that much more
real. As Natalie Portman’s character Sam says,
“You’ve got to hear this one song; it will change
your life.” She might as well have been talking
about this album. It could well serve as someone’s
life soundtrack, as it basically does for Braff s
character in the film.
The soundtrack begins with Coldplay’s “Don’t
Panic,” a bittersweet melody that sets the pace of
the soundtrack and the film. Chris Martin sings,
“We live in a beautiful world,” establishing a
sense of lofty romanticism that plays well with the
plot of the movie.
The lesser-known group The Shins follows up
with “Caring Is Creepy,” a quirky rock song that
sounds straight out of the 1960s with its distant,
almost filtered vocals. With lyrics that are hard
to decipher, this song is a laid-back tune that fits
nicely with the rest of the mix.
Zero 7’s track “In the Waiting Line” addsa
little low-key electronic vibe to the mix, keep
the casual and romantic mood intact with Sop;
Barker’s gentle vocals. Singing a song thatar.
20-something can relate to. Barker gently ao
“Everyone’s saying different things to me,"ta
ping into the confusion of Braffs charactera:
the basic confusion of being in the mid-20sar
not knowing where life is going.
Simon & Garfunkel’s timeless song "Thef
Living Boy in New York” fits nicely into the;
with its acoustic sounds and relatable andthot;
provoking lyrics. As Bargeman struggles with
return to New Jersey, he does seem liketheo
living person.
The last three songs on the soundtrack aret
best. First is Iron & Wine’s cover of the Posti
Service’s “Such Great Heights.” The original
electro-pop tune is turned around and loaded’,
slow acoustics, a change that fits the toneofth
movie perfectly.
Perhaps the star of the album, however, isl
Go” by Frou Frou, the song most often attache
the film’s trailer. “There’s beauty in thebreal
down,” croons out lead singer, Imogen Heap, I
drawing in the listener with its mesmerizing hi
and orchestra-backed sounds.
The album winds down with “Winding Roil
by Bonnie Sommerville, another song drivenT
acoustic guitar that is perhaps too perfect ofa 1
conclusion to the album with the lyrics, “one J
we’ll find our way home.
The only thing missing from this albumitl
two great songs featured in some of the film |
previews, the original “Such Great Heights" I
by the Postal Service and Travis’ “LoveWlI
Come Through.” W'ithout these songs, howl
the 13-track album still echoes the atmospbfl
created by the movie in a way that most moil
cannot achieve.
For a first-time director, Braff has work;
magic with this album. If searching for an
album to round out the summer, music fans
cannot go wrong with adding this soundtn
First six-figure

WASHINGTON — A television
