NCAA
Continued from page 1 B
to rejoin USC and college foot
ball. Details about its decision
have not been released, so the
exact reasoning by the NCAA
is unknown. The effects of this
decision, though, have been felt
throughout the country.
“If he didn’t meet his academ
ic requirements, then it’s under T
standable,” said Texas A&M
head coach Dennis Franchione.
“But if that’s not true, then 1
have a little bit of a hard time
that we open up the draft and
he thinks he can go. But then a
couple of months later a court
decides that he can’t go, and
now young man you can’t play
football anywhere.”
The point
of this is not
to shed tears
for Williams.
He’ll take the
endorsement
money back,
train for a
year and then
sign a hefty
NFL contract next summer. If
anything, it saves him from pos
sible injury. The point, rather, is
to call into question the NCAA's
rationale, or lack thereof, in
these eligibility decisions.
Take the case of the now for
mer University of Colorado re
ceiver Jeremy Bloom. Besides
playing football for Colorado,
Bloom is a professional skier.
In fact, he is the reigning world
champion in the freestyle moguls
and a 2002 Olympian.
However, Bloom did not
have the finances to train for
the 2006 Toronto Olympics,
and thus accepted endorse
ment money to compete for his
country. And while the NCAA
allows its athletes to accept
salaries as professional athletes
in other sports, it doesn’t allow
them to accept endorsement
money from sponsors. This
rigid rule left Bloom stuck.
Skiing isn’t like baseball or
basketball where he could sign
a league contract.
Nonetheless, the NCAA stood
firm in its stance. No need for
reason, as long as it has the rule
in place.
The ruling left Colorado head
coach Gary Barnett discour
aged, but hoping for a change

“Personally, I’m extremely
disappointed in the lack of
flexibility by the NCAA,” Bar
nett told ESPN. “I just hope the
next group of youngsters that
are out there currently partici
pating in these extreme sports
will somehow profit from Jere
my’s experience.”
The NCAA’s stubbornness
is not confined to the foot
ball field. It stretches to the
basketball
arena in the
case of Di
ego Romero.
Florida State
recruited
Romero as a
transfer from
Lon Morris
College in
Texas last year. The NCAA,
however, ruled him ineligible
because he played for a profes
sional team in his home coun
try of Argentina.
Never mind that Romero
signed a contract worth only
$2,400 to cover living expens
es or that he moved to Texas to
enroll in college while denying
other benefits from the Argen
tine club.
None of that seemed to matter
to the NCAA. Once again, it had
its rules, and once again its ruling
didn’t come without scorn.
“He came to this country
with a desire to earn a college
degree and to better himself
and his family,” Dale Dotson,
Romero’s coach at Lon Morris,
wrote in an appeals letter to the
NCAA. “To take that opportu
nity away from him is an injus
tice not only to him, but to all
of those who try to follow the
correct path.”
Case after case, the NCAA has
shown stubbornness that defies
logic and rationality. It is true
that rules are important, but flex
ibility must be valued as well.
Not every case is the same, and
thus should not be treated as if
they are.
The NCAA must be able to
adapt. Times are changing, and
right now it looks as if its policy
of rule over reason will keep it
implanted behind the curve.
