Utiliz ing a variety of tricks and cons, “Hero” makes it impossible not to like this “little big” film from China. Not a bad film by any stretch of the imagi nation, “Hero” is a com plete technical achievement. An artistic beauty to behold, it not only climbs the aesthetic peak that differentiates a film from a “flick,” it does a vic tory dance at the top. Unfortunately, a film that is pretty to look at does not necessarily mean it is entertaining and this is as dry a movie as one can produce without filming a piece of toast in Death Valley for two hours. To date, “Hero” is the most expensive film to come out of China. Ironically, it features a relatively straightforward plot and a minimum of large acting roles. The film begins in ancient China where six kingdoms are beset by a power ful ruler. King Qin, who is determined to unite the warring kingdoms under one leadership: his own. A story of a nameless warrior (Jet Li) who killed a trio of dangerous assassins who planned to murder King Qin unfolds. Summoned to his an intensity marked by cal battle cries. Through a series of flashbacks, the warrior unveils his journey of vivid battles and amazing conquests. For the next hour, the flashbacks are retold for what seems like a million times, each revealing a twist or subterfuge hidden amid de veloping ulterior motives. In a plot device that is reminiscent of Bryan Singer’s classic “The Usual Suspects,” a conversation between two people in one room is peeled away like onion layers, each time marking a new revelation that, when added * Register online 19 F) eercenter.tamu.edu before Sept. 13 to be entered for drawings!
