AGGIELIFE 5A Tuesday, September 7, 2004 THE BATTALION "Goodfellas: Special Edition DVD" Starring Robert DeNiro, Ray Liotta and Joe Pesci Warner Bros. ss critics and fans alike since its almost 15 years ago. The movie Not much can be said about “Good fellas” that hasn’t already been said by countie release remains a high point in the career of one of America’s greatest directors, Martin Scorsese, and stands as one of, if not the, best movies about the mafia. More cntcr- taming than “The Godfather'' and more brutally realistic than “The Sopranos,” Robert saucedo “Goodfellas” is American movie-making at its best. For the few people who have not heard of the seminal classic film, “Goodfellas” tells the story of real-life gangster Henry Hill (played to perfection by Ray Liotta). Instead of the operatic struggles of mafia heads and families, “Goodfellas” shifts the plot a few rungs down the organized crime hierarchy. His entire life marked with theft, assault, and murder. Hill survives three decades of mafia life and, through the Hollywood machine, has managed to tell his story of rising through the ranks of Italian crime families. The film is based on the best-selling Nicholas Pileggi book “Wise- guys,” which was pieced together through an extensive series of in terviews with the real-life Hill. Scorsese has managed to transfer the voice of the underworld and combine it with his own memories of growing up in a primarily Italian neighborhood of New York. Together, this goulash tastes like a four-course meal of the finest pasta, each section prepared and served with a scrumptrulescent side of excellence. The film features an all-star cast, including Robert DeNiro and Joe Pesci, working in their prime. Pesci’s “Goodfellas” role will probably end up being the most memorable character he’ll play in his career. “Goodfellas” is required viewing for any fan of American film, and (the announcement of a special edition release had), fans thinking that the film had finally received all the trappings it. Yet the special edition will leave the masses of fans disappointed. On the first disc, the film is treated to a clear and crisp presentation that thankfully does not require watchers to switch discs or sides, as was the case with the previous edition of the film. Instead, the entire film is presented as freshly as it was in 1990. Alongside the film are two greatly informative commentary tracks. The first track features a Who’s Who list of actors and crewmem bers, who provide their thoughts about the film. The track features no less then 10 participants, including Scorsese, Ray Liotta. Paul Sorvino and Pileggi. The second track is a.real treat, as it features the real-life Hill talking to the FBI agent primarily responsible for overseeing the case against Hill. It is refreshing to hear two men whose lives are rep resented in the film talk about how close the film is to reality. The disc also features a list of the film’s awards and nominations; this, unfortunately, sets the tone for the second disk, which primar ily serves as one big self-congratulatory slap on the back. While few would dispute r the validity of the claims made, audience mem bers do not need two documentaries that serve as reminders of the film’s worth. “Getting Made” begins as an informative look into the film’s mak ing, as it explores Scorsese’s connection with the material and the struggles he overcame to bring his vision to the screen. It quickly evolves into a smothering of praise for Scorcese and his film from the actors and crewmembers who worked on the film. “Made Men: The Goodfellas Legacy” is an unabashed love letter to the film from a col lection of filmmakers who were inspired by the film in their own ca reers. “The Workaday Gangster” is a slightly more informative docu mentary about the real-life world of mob life through the eyes of Hill. “Paper is Cheaper than Film” is a short montage of storyboard and film comparisons. A theatrical trailer is also included on the disc. The pleasure of seeing an American classic in pristine form is enough to warrant the purchase of this DVD, but a few more extras would have sweetened the pot a great deal. Altogether, the disc is a great additio y DVD collection and a must-see movie for any fan of film. ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ 00400 0 00 000 0000 00000 V ysu sis it C Ol vidic s*«lfi kilt my it fist is ytu (in tnly UtCh it to pllltl yOur dlto toad for Sitjroiy ifttfflOOT TV Piet ip • copy ih»« you Oiui i CtIKCI Too mould Mvt Ooufht tots yilttrdly GREAT DEALS EVERY TUESDAY IN THE BATTALION ■ 1 I ■ <71 FREE Paraffin Wax for any service from *25.00 & tip 2501 S.Texas Ave. D 104 Next to 4.0 <£ Go, Near Lack’t Furniture [/.SA.
