“We encourage people to pray their own type of
prayer,” said Mari Lisa Carney, programs coordi
nator for Coalition for Life.
The Coalition chose to protest for 40 days be
cause the number symbolizes the number of days
Noah was in the ark, Carney said.
Williams also said the number 40 is the num
ber of days Christians have historically spent in
prayer and fasting.
Carney said the Coalition coordinated the pro
test with the start of school to inform students
about abortions and health care options.
Larson said that in the past, volunteer es
corts have been used during protests to support
Planned Parenthood patients.
“Volunteer escorts walk people to and from their
cars after they have parked inside the gate, and once
they are finished w ith their health care services, we
escort them back to their cars.” Larson said. “It is
important that (protestors) know that it is their right to
be there and to hand out information,” “But the 14th
also means it is (the patients’) right to make their own
private, child-bearing decisions.”
The responses to the protest have been mixed
and varied depending on who is driving by.
“Some reactions we can't understand, but you
can hear that (people) are angry with us. and some
times using profanity,” Williams said.
Tim Smith, a former student who was w ith his
family, has been praying there for three years.
“I come out weekly to stand and pray for one
hour,” Smith said.
