THE BATTALION
The Aggies will head to Ames, Iowa for a
showdown with the Iowa State Cyclones on Oct.
9 in hopes of continuing the Cyclones woes from
last season.
There wasn’t much that the Cyclones could take
out of last season’s 2-10 record, except that there’s
always next year. The Cyclones hope to bring the
University back to its past greatness, when it went
to three consecutive bowl games from 2000-2002.
With an older and wiser team coming back this sea
son, the team hopes to take advantage of a schedule
that doesn’t include Oklahoma or Texas and try to
finish with a .500 winning percentage.
The Cyclone offense was nonexistent last year,
scoring a mere 43 points over the last six games
of the season. The stretch included back-to-back
shutout losses, 28-0 and 45-0 to Kansas State and
Nebraska respectively.
The Iowa State offense returns seven starters;
but that doesn’t say much since the receiver, quar
terback and running back positions are all huge
questions going into the season.
The Cyclones quarterback position is wide open
this year with last season’s starter, sophomore Aus
tin Flynn and redshirt freshmen Bret Meyer bat
tling it out for the starting job. Flynn faltered down
the stretch last season, losing the last 10 games of
the season and throwing for a paltry 1,238 yards
and five touchdowns. It’s no surprise that Flynn’s
inconsistent play and lack of leadership has led
head Coach Dan McCamey to view Meyer as the
current leader going into the season.
The running back and receiving corps are two posi
tions in dire need of help after a must-forget season.
The Cyclone receivers are going into this season look
ing for someone to lead the pack after all five starters
from last season departed. There is a very good chance
that a freshman will be the team's leading receiver after
the first game of the season. The Cyclones will look to
redshirt freshmen Todd Blythe and Milan Moses for a
big boost to a group that is a relative unknown.
Just like the receiving position, a lack of playing
time is what the Cyclones are missing at running
back. Out of the six running backs going into this
season, five out of the six are true or redshirt fresh
men. Leading rusher, sophomore Stevie Hicks, is re
turning after a strong second half of the season that
saw him rush for 471 yards on 123 carries. While
he is penciled in as the starter this season, Hicks
shouldn't look too far ahead with star recruits Jason
Scales and Brandon Gunn in his rearview mirror.
The Cyclone defense looks to make some serious
changes to a group that gave up more than 30 point
per game last year. The team hopes that senior comer-
back Ellis Hobbes and senior middle linebacker Bran
don Brown can shore up some of the gaping holes in
VS.

last season's secondary and line. The Cyclone defense
is going to be extremely young this season returning
only four seniors, the team w ill look to its speed and
strength to overpower opposing offenses in hopes of
getting to the quarterback early and often.
The battle in the trenches between the Aggies and
the Cyclones should be a player mismatch unless
Iowa State can answer its question marks at quarter
back, receiver and running back. The Aggies should
look to overpower the Cyclones' soft offensive line in
hopes of getting to Iowa States’ young quarterback.
The Aggies offense should then look to take ad
vantage of a young Cyclone secondary by allow
ing Reggie McNeal to pick apart the defense piece
by piece. Once A&M has established the pass,
McNeal should look to star running back Courtney
Lewis to break through the huge holes in the Cy
clone line for some big gains.

defense,” said Utah senior line
backer Corey Dodds. “You’ve
got to let them know how
tough you are and that you’re
not just going to let them roll
over you every time.”
Franchione cited the slightly
inexperienced offensive line as
the reason of some of the Aggie
offensive problems.
“The o-line fell apart a time or
two in the first quarter and that
put some unwanted pressure on
Reggie,” Franchione said. “But
as the game progressed, the bet
ter the offense got and the more
we began to catch up to the pace
of the game.”
Utah’s offense was equally
strong, led by a balanced run
and pass attack. Smith finished
the game 21-29 with 359 pass
ing yards and had a role in five
of the six Utah touchdowns.
On the ground, senior running
back Marty Johnson rushed for
81 yards, and Smith added an
other 107 yards.
Overall, the Utah offense
amassed a total of 582 yards.
Despite the score being so
<4 .
This is a new
year and this is a
new Utah team.
The tides can turn
around in a year, in
a month, in a
second, and the
tides have turned
for us.
— Corey Dodds
Utah senior linebacker
high, Dodds said Utah was
not attempting to run the
score up to get revenge for
last year’s meeting between
the two teams.
“Of course winning your
home opener against a great
team like A&M is great,”
Dodds said. “But for revenge,
no. This is a new year and this
is a new Utah team. That’s just
how college football is. The
tides can turn around in a year,
in a month, in a second, and
the tides have turned for us.”
