HILDEBRAND
Over the past months,
student government has
been working on a number
of issues affecting stu
dents. The closing of the
Commons Dining Center
has been of high concern
to Aggies as the semes
ter begins. Food Services decided to close
the Commons after heavy
financial losses during the
past semesters. Over the
years, student input had been
gathered for Commons’ din
ing improvements, but after
the previously mentioned
financial losses, along with
health and safety issues,
another option had to be cre
ated. Past student input will
be transferred to the plans for
the new facilities upstairs.
In turn. Food Services decided to expand the
existing upstairs food court for diners.
This expansion will include an international
line and a more traditional entree line. Student
government heard of the decision to close the
Commons during the summer and has since
been advocating a solution that can best serve
the Southside residents and diners at the Com
mons in the interim period. Administrators, fac
ulty and staff are working from all angles to best
meet the expectations of the Southside residents.
Students who enjoy having the dining
facility in such a central location should take
interest in offering their input over the process,
trusting their voice will be heard. The new din
ing services have the potential to overcrowd
during peak meal times, but rest assured that
frequent changes will be made to refine the
interim process. Students, of course, deserve
as many dining options as possible, and once
the final phase is complete, it will be nothing
shy of excellent.
The next option under discussed is whether
students will be able to go through the line
more than once to fulfill the desire for all-you-
can-eat dining. Over the summer. University
staff worked hard to create a space that would
offer seating for students, but not infringe on

Student government representatives are
serving on the newly created Commons Steer
ing Committee. This committee has been
tasked with collecting student opinions regard
ing the closing, how the new plan is working
and future plans Food Services has for the
Commons. It is imperative
that Southside residents and
Commons diners provide
members of the committee
with feedback.
