It’s that time of year again
- football season. Teams across
the nation are eager to strap on
pads and take the Field. Perhaps
no other team is more ready to
get the season under way than
the Colorado Buffaloes. The
program was tainted by off-sea
son scandals that included alle
gations of rape at recruiting par
ties and sexual harassment.
The controversies led to state
and university investigations
and prompted a media fury that
is yet to die. After serving a
short suspension during the in
vestigations, head coach Gary
Barnett is back and ready to
concentrate on football.
“I think everybody is just anx
ious to get out there and play,”
said Barnett during this week’s
Big 12 conference call. “And
our team will be a little more
than most, because of what
they’ve had the opportunity to
go through.”
Because the Buffs’ first
game is against in-state rival
Colorado State, the team is
even more anxious.
“I think it’s become a good
rivalry because we got our butts
kicked in 1999, 2000, and then
in 2002 we lost as well,” Barnett
said. “We’ve gone from being
the team that should win to be
ing the team that got beat, and
they’ve taken advantage of it.
They do a good job there.”
This rivalry will not be played
in Denver on a neutral field;
rather, Colorado will enjoy its
first home field advantage over
the Rams in seven years. Barnett
hopes the home atmosphere will

Can the Big 12 handle another

These aren’t your father’s Ne
braska Comhuskers.
Kickoff is scheduled for
6:10 p.m. at Nebraska’s Me
morial Stadium.
While receiving less attention
than Colorado this off-season,
the Nebraska Comhuskers still
stirred talk at the water cooler
with the hiring of former Oak
land Raider head coach and
West Coast offense advocate
Bill Callahan.
While other traditional run
ning teams, such as the Univer
sity of Oklahoma, switched to
pass-first attacks during the early
and late 1990s, Nebraska stayed
with the run with great success,
winning national titles in 1994,
1995 and 1997.
A balanced offensive attack for
the Huskers meant occasionally
giving the ball to the fullback on
a dive while running the option to
both sides of the field. All of this
will change as Callahan plans to
use the same pass-happy system
that led him and the Raiders to
the 2002 Super Bow 1.
The first chance to sec
new-look Huskers will be
Saturday as they host Division
1-AA power Western Illinois.
While Nebraska is the heavy fa
vorite, there will be some grow
ing pains in its first couple of
games. Nonetheless, the game
should provide a good look at
what scheme to expect offen
sively for the Huskers for years
to come. In fact, a quote from
Callahan during this week's Big
12 conference call might fore
shadow what is to come.
“I will tell you that there is a
lot of imagination and creativity
from offensive coaches, espe
cially in this conference,” Cal
lahan said. “When you look at
