has seen his share
of bands come and
go in his long and
distinguished ca
reer. Since becom
ing a hired axe-man
for the apparently
indestructible
Ozzy Osbourne at
the tender age of
20 in 1987, he wielded a guitar for the Ozz-
man, as well as for his southern-rock band
Pride & Glory. His talent made it to the big
screen, too, when he played opposite Mark
Wahlberg as the lead guitarist of the fiction
al Judas Priest-based band Steel Dragon in
“Rock Star.”
His main project, though, is Black Label
Society: a confederation of whisky-swilling
metal marauders that has seen more mem
bers come and go than Spinal Tap and Me-
tallica combined.
Zakk certainly owes a lot to Ozzy, even
borrowing members of his band; when BLS
and Ozzy bass player Robert Trujillo (Tru
jillo is Spanish for “Giant bass player who
looks like Thunder Hawk from ‘Street Fight
er’”) was traded to Metallica for Jason New-
stead, a third-round draft pick and a player
to be named later, though, Wylde was left
without a bassist.
A lesser musician may have let that stand
in his way. Instead, Zakk played bass gui
tar, rhythm guitar, lead guitar, violin, viola,
cello, bass, banjo, hurdy gurdy, harp, dobro,
piano, timpani, key-tar, alpenhorn, flute,
glockenspiel, recorder and triangle for his
12th studio release. Black Label Society’s
“Hangover Music Volume VI,” and wrote
the liner notes in his own blood after master
ing the slide whistle.
Observant fans will note that Wylde has
temporarily abandoned the frantic, squeal
ing, Marshall-and-Gibson-driven tone that
made him famous. On the new album, he
takes out his signature bull’s-eye Les Paul,
“The Grail,” for fleeting moments on the re
cord, but it’s used for emphasis, like using
boldface letters on a word processor.
In its place, Wylde slings an acoustic
guitar for most of the record. The songs are
laid-back and soothing — not what fans of
the hirsute, Viking-esque god of metal have
come to expect.
Fans of Wylde’s only solo release, “Book
of Shadows,” already know that his gruff
vocal style contrasts well with the resonant
timbre of an acoustic guitar. On this release,
he follows the same formula that made songs
such as the “Mama, I’m Coming Home” and
“No More Tears” mega-hits with a mellow
feel punctuated by a face-melting guitar solo
and it works well.
The most accurate measures of a record
are its first track, the title track and the last
track. This one lacks a title track, but the
listener is instantly hooked in the opening
moments of the album on the song “Crazy
or High.” Wylde speaks to male metal fans
(as if there were any other kind) everywl
with his lyrics admonishing the mei
nature of women.
Tracks like “Queen of Sorrow,” “Step]
Stone” and “House of Doom” parti
highlight Wylde’s surprising vocal
and ability to bridge the vast gapbeiiit;
the Eagles and Black Sabbath.
The last song on the album is li

Although in the past Hancock had usually coordinated with
her roommates when picking out a theme for their room, this
year was different.
“My roommate this year already bought her stuff when I went to
buy mine,” she said. “But most of our mutual items are neutral col
ors, like the big gray area rug we have between our beds. We wanted
these type of items to coordinate with all the colors in our room.”
Hancock is proud of the compliments she received from ev
eryone who walks in.
When it comes to storage, space is limited and Hancock be
lieves organizational items are the key. From Tupperware draw
ers and crates to shower caddies, she had to find a place for
everything.
“I have too much stuff,” she said. “I have so much in all the
little spaces all over the room that hold everything from my toi
letries and styling products to my makeup and jewelry.”
Over the years she’s spent in the dorms, Hancock found cre
ative ways to find more space in her small rooms.
“As the seasons change I would move out all the clothes!
closet that would be too warm or too cold and put them inthestonj
units above,” she said.
Hancock has noticed that others in the building have ways*
condense their belongings into the limited space.
“A lot of students are opting for the loft, where the beds
above a study area,” she said, “I’ve always wanted one,butIW
choose between a loft and a car payment.”
There have been many trends throughout the dorms that Iij
caught on quickly, Hancock said.
“A big thing is to decorate the doors in the hallways,”Hit
cock said, “And another must is covering up the ugly cii
block walls.”
While she uses several movie posters and pictures to decors
the walls, Hancock has seen many students covering them wit
beer signs, glow-in-the-dark stars and corkboards.
“A cool item we have is a bulletin board that looks likepuzis
pieces, on one side it’s cork and the other is a dry erase board,
great to keep reminders on for like when 1 have a testorsomi
thing,” she said.
