Enron ex-trader’s guilty plea
to aid states with energy lawsuits
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A former Enron Corp.
trader is obliged to help public utilities as part of a plea
agreement in which he admitted manipulating energy
markets during California’s power crisis in 2001.
John Forney, 42, of Upper Arlington, Ohio, is the third
Enron official to plead guilty to manipulating electricity
prices from Enron’s now-defunct trading office in Portland,
Ore. The crisis played a role in Pacific Gas & Electric Co.’s
bankruptcy and will leave California consumers paying
abnormally high electricity prices for years.
With the guilty plea Thursday, Forney is expected to
cooperate with the ongoing investigation into Houston-
based Enron, as well as reveal details about how other
energy firms may have played a role, U.S. Attorney Kevin
Ryan said. Four employees of Reliant Corp. have already
been charged with deliberately shutting down power
plants to increase the price of California electricity.
“We’re interested in sitting down and having a good
conversation with Mr. Forney to see whathemaj|
