SPORTS IN BRIEF
Track and field
teams compete in
championships
The Texas A&M women's
track and field team brought
home a 13th-place finish from
the 2004 NCM
Championships Saturday night
in Austin. This was A&M’s
highest NCAA championship
finish in school history.
UCLA took first, for its first
national title in 21 years, fol
lowed by defending champion
LSU. The University of
Nebraska took third and the
University of Texas took fourth.
Senior Melissa Gulli got
things started for the Aggies oo
Thursday night with a fifth-
place finish in the 10,000-
meter run. The Aggies scored
13 of the 17 team points on
Friday night in the women's
javelin. Senior Katy Doyle's
NCAA title in the javelin com
petition. along with a sixth-
place finish by sophomore
Rachel Walker racked up the
large majority of the Aggies'
team point total.
The A&M men’s track and
field team finished in a tie for
38th place with a total ol
seven team points. Senior
Ronny Jimenez' fifth-place fin
ish in the shot put Saturday
night, coupled with a sixth-
place finish in the discus by
senior Josh Ralston, made up
A&M's full team-point total.

Pistons beat
Lakers in game 4
AUBURN HILLS, Mich. (AP)-
Poised and primed for a title,
the Detroit Pistons took careot
business while the Lakers lost
their tempers.
Building a lead early in the
fourth quarter, holding it the
rest of the way and repelling
every Los Angeles rally, the
Pistons moved one victory clos
er to their first championship in
14 years with a convincing 88-
80 victory Sunday night in
Game 4 of the NBA Finals.
With a 3-1 lead, Detroit has
made one thing crystal clear: It
is the better of these two bas
ketball teams, winning without
egos and superstars - and the
problems that come with them.
These were some of the
scenes that Pistons' fans will
cherish: Chauncey Billups mak
ing timely 3-pointers, Rasheed
Wallace backpedalling down-
court with a minute left after
making a jumper that capped
his best game of the playoffs;
Richard Hamilton calmly knock
ing down free throws.
As for the Lakers, the snapshots
were these: Kobe Bryant scream
ing at the referees and picking up
a late technical foul; Shaquille
O’Neal yelling at someone in the
Lakers' huddle, most likely
Bryant, for failing to get him the
ball; Karl Malone staying parked
on the bench for the entire fourtfi
quarter, a nonfactor again.
It’s almost over for these
Lakers, their breakup possibly
coming in the next week.
Game 5 is Tuesday night, and
the Pistons could become the
first team to bring the title back
to the Eastern Conference since
Michael Jordan’s Chicago Bulls
won it in 1998.

Cardinals rout
Rangers, 13-2
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) -
The St. Louis Cardinals might
not want to go home.
After batting around in each of
the first two innings and build
ing a 10-run lead, the Cardinals
completed another winning
roadtrip with a 13-2 win Sunday
over the Texas Rangers.
“It’s the same game here, in
St. Louis and everywhere,"
said catcher Yadier Molina,
who drove in three runs. “Let's
go play the same game we
played here.”
