Supermarkets pull
suspect candy
HARLINGEN, Texas (AP) - A
chain of 13 supermarkets in the
Rio Grande Valley is pulling all
Mexican candy from its shelves
after reports that similar candies
in California contained high levels
of lead, officials said Monday.
“We felt that we would best
serve our customers by taking this
seriously," Jaime Lopez of Lopez
Supermarkets. Inc. said after a
series of newspaper articles by the
Orange County Register that
appeared prominently in Valley
newspapers last week.
Officials with the Texas
Department of Health have collect
ed Mexican candies from around
the state for testing but don't
expect results for several days,
The Register reported ttiat more
than 100 brands of candy sold in
the United States had tested posi
tive for dangerous lead levels over
the past 10 years but were si on
store shelves. Most of the danger
ous candy came from Mexico.
