1TW ibility to lobby, anti these laws
’■Uli ,ave a purpose, but they are not

The report documents LIT
“It was a iystem officials meeting with
tale legislators, monetary con-
ibutions made hy members of
e UT Board of Regents to
ilitical campaigns and the pos-
jble illegalities of state institu
ws lobbying for legislation.
The UT System issued a
jtement April 26 in response
the report, in which it stated
ie UT System complied with
late laws regarding the prohibi
on of the use of appropriated
loney to attempt to influence
le passage of a legislative
:asure.
"UT Watch misrepresents
divides of the UT System dur
igthe 78th session of the Texas
.egislature," said Michae
iirden, UT System spokesman
i the statement
Schwellenbach said he tried
ilobby against tuition deregu-

ilh challenges such as fund-
ig, time and inability to be

as UT, which has no such

Mark McCaig. president of

ie report and found it to be

out to students, and 1 wouldn’t
put it past A&M officials to do
something like this,” he said.
McCaig said tuition deregu
lation increases the financial
burden on current students, as
well as on future students.
"It will prevent future stu
dents from coming to A&M who
don’t have the financial means
to do so,” he said.
Schwellenbach said he is
trying to find the best way to
figure* out who would be the
most appropriate to present the
report to.
“We at first were going to
present it to the Texas attorney
general, but instead possibly
present it to the Public Integrity
Unit, which may be able to han
dle this matter better,”
Schwellenbach said.
The report has already cap
tured the attention of the chair
man of the Texas Democratic
Party, Charles Soechting, but
Schwellenbach said he is unsure
whether Soechting’s motivation
is true to the students’ cause or
for promoting a political issue.
"I don’t want this to turn into
a partisan issue; instead I’d like
to see something done for the
students,” Schwellenbach said.
Schwellenbach and McCaig
said they agree that there is a
need to get student participation
across the state to have their
voices heard in the 79th legisla
tive session.
"I hope this sparks activity
by other student governments
around the state, in order to
get ready for the next legisla
tive session, because we are
going to have to match the
lobbying power the universi
ties systems put forth,"
Schwellenbach said.
