Harrington. “I thought he set the tone, 1 thought
we played great defense, and when this team plays
defense we have a chance to win.’great defense,
and when this team plays defense we have a
chance to win.”
Gonzales held the Aggies hitless until the fifth
inning, eventually giving up only two hits in six
innings of work. The Bobcats’ bullpen then picked
up where their starter left off by shutting down the
Aggies for the rest of the night.
“He was just a lot better than we were" said
A&M head coach Mark Johnson. “1 was pleased
with our pitching and that was the real question
mark going in. but we couldn't make an adjust
ment to him. That’s disappointing because you
have to make adjustments, and our hitters didn’t
do that tonight.”
The Aggies’ best chance for a run came in the
eighth inning, but they couldn’t come up with the
needed hits. Junior left fielder Travis Bartek led
off the inning with a hard single to right. Senior
second baseman Matt Alexander’s attempted sac
rifice hunt, however, went straight back to the
pitcher who threw Bartek out at second.
But all was not lost for the inning as the next
batter, sophomore Cliff Pennington, drew a walk.
Sophomore first baseman Coby Mavroulis then
hit a sacrifice fly deep to center field, which
advanced Alexander, the potential tying run, to
third base. But the Aggies squandered the oppor
tunity, as senior right fielder Cory Patton flew out
to center, ending the inning.
In the ninth, the heart of the Aggies’ order
had no chance against Bobcat junior closer
Domonic Kamos. Ramos quickly retired the
Aggies to end the game.
Despite the loss, the Aggies were pleased w ith
their pitching. Sophomore starter Dan Donaldson
looked strong in four innings of work.
Unlike the Aggies, the Bobcats came through with
a needed run when junior left fielder Matt Miller’s
single scored junior third biwoman Kyle Anson from
second base in the top of the fourth inning. - -
“We had a great jx* a d by our baserunner.”
Harrington said. “The ball left and looked like it
could be caught, but Kyle did a great job
baserunning.”
The Aggies w ill try' to recover from this tough
loss as they head to Lincoln. Neb., for a weekend
series against the Comhuskers.
