that he felt could recruit the state of
Texas,” Gillispie said. “He asked a
lot of people, and a lot of people
spoke highly of me so he hired me,
basically over the phone.”
Gillispie spent five seasons on
Selfs staff, three at Tulsa and two
at the University of Illinois, before
taking over as head coach at the
University of Texas-El Paso.
“Billy did a great job for us at
Tulsa and Illinois,” Self said.
“He is a huge reason why our
teams experienced some success
at those two schools.”
Gillispie said Self was a men
tor to him and that the two share
a lot of the same philosophies
about coaching basketball.
“It was a joy to work with
(Self) because of our likeness
es,” Gillispie said.
So far Gillispie has been busy at
A&M. He has already hired an
assistant coach, Alvin Brooks, who
has coaching experience at the
University of Houston. Gillispie
has also been a friendly face on
campus, visiting with students at
baseball games and tennis matches.
“I didn’t know (going to the
events) was such a big deal,”
Gillispie said. “I was doing what
I’ve always done. Life is all
about relationships, and I want to
develop a million relationships
while I’m at Texas A&M.”
And Gillispie has built rela
tionships wherever he has gone,
which has made him a great coach
and recruiter, according to Texas
Association of Basketball Coach
executive director Rick Sherley.
“He’s got great relationships
with all the basketball coaches in
the state and gets along with
everyone,” Sherley said. “Billy
just has a way with young peo
ple. He’s got a positive attitude,
and he’s a good teacher.”
For five of the past six sea
sons Gillispie has been a coach
for an NCAA tournament team,
while A&M hasn’t had a team in
the NCAA tournament since
1986. One of those two streaks
will end during Gillispie’s era.
“(Gillispie) obviously did a
remarkable job at UTEP, and the
people at Texas A&M should be
very excited to have him there,”
Self said. “No one will work
harder than him.”

decision that they’re going to
get the runner at second or
their going to be down 1-0,”
Evans said. “It’s nice to have
speed like (McDonald’s) so
we can (run that play).”
Gregory hit a home run
over the center field wall in
the bottom of the fourth to
give the Aggies an insurance
run, putting them ahead 2-0.
Gregory said the team’s
confidence comes from
Kapchinski and the dominance
she has displayed recently in
the pitcher’s circle.
“(Kapchinski) just knows
that (batters) aren’t going to
reach home plate, and that’s
how she approaches every
hitter,” Gregory said. “The
confidence she brings carries
over to us.”
