raised $7,054 this year through Shack-A-Thon,
Amos said. This money will go toward a house
that Aggie Habitat will build next fall in
Sharon's Court in Bryan along with other area
Habitats. It costs Aggie Habitat $15,000 for each
house built.
When it rained Tuesday, the organizations
hurried to cover their shacks with tarp,
Wright said.
“We put tarp over the roof and the porch to
remedy the leak,” Wright said. “Duct tape can fix
anything.”
During the week of Shack-A-Thon, Aggies
gather outside of the shacks socializing, listening
to music and playing games, which Wright
described as resembling a huge slumber party.
“I played PlayStation and took a nap,” Wright
said. "Lots of bonding takes place, and it's for a
good cause.”
Wright said she plans on living in the shack
all week.
“I'm 5-foot-ll, and I slept in a two by three
foot area,” Wright said.
Amos, who is the co-director of special events
for Aggie Habitat for Humanity, said organiza
tions were invited to bid online for lots, and lots
are awarded to the top 11 to 12 bidders.
“If the top bidding organization wants two
lots, they have to bid twice the average bid,”
Amos said.
Lechner Hall placed a $2,007 bid and received
two lots, Amos said.
Lechner’s two-lot shack includes "stadium
seating” to play video games and a 55-gallon
drum that dispenses running water, said Brian
Young, a freshman aerospace engineering
major.
"To raise money for the bid. we made and sold
a movie, sold T-shirts, received donations from
businesses and parents and sold cookies in the
dorm." Young said.
Most of the wood was donated. Young said.
From 4 p.m. to 12 a.m. Monday, organizations
with lots began building their makeshift shacks.
There were a few restrictions on building, such
as no sheet metal and no cardboard support,
Amos said.
Sophomore English major Marc Brubaker
said the Wesley Foundation’s shack, which fea
tures preconstructed plywood walls, is the stur
diest one.
"We were very confident throughout the rain,”
Brubaker said. “We had planned on rain.”
There was only a slight leak and the rain
soaked his sleeping hag, Brubaker said.
"It is a whole lot of fun putting it together and
coming here and being able to hang out the whole
week," Brubaker said. "It’s a really good way to
raise money and awareness for Habitat.”
The shacks must be tom down by 6 p.m. on
Thursday. Dumpsters are being provided by Texas
Commercial Waste, Amos said.
