Whack! th e battT Junior Ante Matijevic returns a backhand during Baseball Continued from page 5 his doubles match against Rice Tuesday evening, Tennis Continued from page 5 pitcher Ryan Herrera. With A&M senior infielder Erik Schindewolf on third base and one out, sophomore infielder Coby Mavroulis lifted a fly ball to deep center field that easily scored Schindewolf. Herrera shut down the Aggies the next two innings, allowing no hits and striking out two. Herrera would experience more problems in the fourth inning, however, allowing four more runs to cross the plate with two outs on the board. All the runs in the inning came on misplayed balls in the infield or short bloop singles to the outfield. Only one of the Bearkats’ three errors occurred in the fourth. The short hits would be the case for A&M all game long, with only two balls making it to deep outfield territory. “They seemed to be throwing real soft out there,” Mavroulis said. “It’s real hard to stay back on those kind of pitchers when you hit against harder throwing pitchers most of the time.” The closest the Bearkats came to the Aggies was in the seventh inning. A&M freshman Doug Frame started the inning off shaky, loading the bases off of two walks and a single. A line drive that bounced off of Frame’s thigh and another single scored two runs for Sam Houston, cutting A&M’s lead to 5 to 3. A&M sophomore Robert Ray entered the game for Frame, shutting down any hopes the Bearkats had at a comeback. The Aggies added insurance runs in the 1 eighth inning, scoring three with two outs on the board. “We kind of killed ourselves out there,” Rupp said. “Letting them score so many runs with two outs and committing too many defensive mistakes aren’t the ways to win ballgames. If we got more outs in the right places, we could have won.” Despite many focusing on just confer ence games during the season, A&M sopho more infielder Cliff Pennington said the win against Sam Houston was important for the Aggies’ season outcome. “Every ‘W’ counts,” Pennington said. “All those single ‘W’s add up at the end of the season.” match.” Cass, however, defended his decision, saying it was done to improve his team’s success at doubles. “I’ve wanted to change for about two weeks, but I just haven't had the guts to do it. It seems like an awkward time because they have a top doubles team and so do we. but my goal is to win the doubles point,” Cass said. “1 had to split up (Cook and now-graduated Ryan Newport) a lot last year, and I feel like it is time to ( ? split up Cook and Matijevic). We’ve lost seven or eight doubles points, and that’s too many in my book.” As it turned out, the doubles point had nothing to do with the outcome of the match, as Rice took two of the three matches to gain the point. Losing the doubles point usually spells doom for the Aggies, as they enter the match a measly 1-6 after dropping dou bles. On this occasion, however, the Aggies came back with Fire, and won a deciding four out of six singles matches. “When I walked out tonight, I just thought there was more consistency to our itmos hey w In t ;ay, “u snot i lad in his mi Wil ,ee wh rate aa Ini group, as far as level of play," Cass said noticed it right away. In the A&M-UTsJ seven of the 18 games have been decided by one run or less, with Texas leading the series, Down the road in Austin, the Longhorns will be hungry in hopes of their first confers win, and will likely see no better opponent to take down than the Aggies Losing their first four conference games is not how the Longhorns would choosetote Big 12.
