SPORTS IN BRIEF
Aggie softball
goes 1-4 in
tournament
The Texas A&M
University softball team
escaped from Fullerton,
Calif, last weekend with a
1-4 record in the Kia
Classic, widely considered
to be the most competitive
tournament in the country.
A&M’s lone victory came
in the opener against
Princeton on March 18. The
Aggies shut out the Tigers 6-
0 before falling to No. 9
Washington, 5-0.
On Friday, A&M dropped
a contest with No. 13
Pacific, 1-0, and lost to
DePaul, 10-5.
Saturday’s matchup
against No. 23 Arizona State
saw the Aggies come out
again on the short side as
they were defeated, 5-3.
Sophomore first base-
man Lindsay Park crushed
a three-run home run in the
second inning of
Saturday’s contest with the
Sun Devils to give A&M a 3-
0 lead, but ASU would rally
back to score five unan
swered runs in the fifth to
claim the victory.
A&M opens Big 12 play at
2 p.m. on March 27th when
they host No. 7 Oklahoma at
the Aggie Softball Field.
Astros take
Dodgers 10-7
VERO BEACH, Fla. (AP) -
Hideo Nomo said he isn’t
worried that his poor pre
season will carry over to the
regular season.
Nome’s Grapefruit League
ERA soared to 9.17 Sunday
after giving up seven runs in
five innings as the Los
Angeles Dodgers lost 10-7 to
the Houston Astros at
Holman Stadium.
Nomo, 35, has given up
18 earned runs, 28 hits, 17
extra-base hits and six
homers in 17 2/3 innings
this spring. Opponents are
batting .384 against him.
Nomo went 16-13 with a
3.09 ERA last year.
Texas beats OU
NORMAN, Okla. (AP) -
Michael Hollimon hit a RBI-
single in the top of the ninth
and J. Brent Cox had strike
outs on the inning's final two
outs, leading Texas to a 5-4
win over Oklahoma on
Sunday.
Texas (26-3, 2-1 Big 12)
has won 15 of its last 16
games, with the only loss
coming against the Sooners
(12-9, 1-2) on Saturday.
The Longhorns scored
three runs in the fifth inning,
getting RBI singles from
Carson Kainer, Drew Stubbs
and Hunter Harris. That spurt
gave Texas a 3-2 lead.
Texas and Oklahoma
each scored a run in the
eighth inning, then
Hollimon drove in Kainer to
put the Longhorns up 5-3 in
the ninth.
Oklahoma’s Ryan Rohlinger
had a RBI single to pull the
Sooners within 5-4, but Cox
threw two strikeouts to earn
his third save of the season.
Justin Simmons (5-1) gave
up two runs on five hits in the
win. The loser was Mark
Roberts (4-2).
Golfer Sorenstam
snags 49th win
SUPERSTITION MOUNTAIN,
Ariz. (AP) — It's 49 victories
and counting for Annika
Sorenstam.
The six-time player of the
year survived hot, windy con
ditions in the desert Sunday to
win the Safeway International
at 18-under 270. In her LPGA
season debut, she earned her
49th career tour victory with a
four-stroke margin over
Cristie Kerr.
Sorenstam punctuated her
triumph by rolling in a 25-foot
birdie putt on the par-5, 508-
yard 18th.
