A&M senior wide receiver Terrence Murphy sets a personal and school
record in the vertical jump with a leap of 41 -1 /2 inches at Texas A&M foot
ball's annual Night of Champions Wednesday at G Rollie White Coliseum.
Six school records fell and 19 players lifted personal bests.
A8cM heads to LSU
By Jon Gilbert
the battalion
Texas A&M knows all
about tough places to play.
A&M fans make the George P.
Mitchell Tennis Center a diffi
cult place for opposing teams to
get a win. Yet, Louisiana State
I m\a'sii\'s home court may
he about as tough a place as the
Aggies will see this season.
A&M women's tennis head
coach Bobby Kleinecke real
izes the hostility his team is
going to encounter in Baton
Rouge, La., Thursday.
“No matter what has been
going in your season, when
you play LSU, you throw
everything out,” Kleinecke
said. “You can throw out the
records and everything else.
It's a hostile environment
down there and we will have to
be ready to play.”
The Aggies (9-5, 2-0 Big
12) know these tough road
matches will help their play.
After all, they are playing their
best tennis of the season right
now, partly because of their
brutally challenging non-con
ference schedule where they
played six teams ranked in the
nation’s top 13.
A&M is coming off a 4-2 win
against No. 30 Pennsylvania
Monday night. The Aggies lost
the doubles point, only to rally
back to win four of five singles
matches for the victory. A&M
senior Roberta Spencer had a key
come-from-behind win in singles
that helped secure the win. For
A&M, it was its second win this
season against a top-30 opponent.
“We won the match, but
(Kleinecke) wasn’t pleased,”
said A&M junior Helga Vieria.
“We didn’t play well in doubles
and we need to work on that.”
Doubles has been the one
aspect of the team’s perfor
mance this year that hasn’t
been consistently solid. With
seven of its next eight matches
on the road, and the heart of the
Big 12 schedule coming up, the
team needs to conquer its dou
bles struggles.
LSU (7-5. 0-4 SEC) is com
ing off a road trip where it lost
four of five matches and all
four matches against
Southeastern Conference
schools. It is still a dangerous
team though. After all. it made
the NCAA Tournament last
year and lost, ironically, to
A&M in the first round.
“It’s a rivalry,” Kleinecke
said. “We played them twice
last year and both matches
were highly-competitive and
close. We will have to come
ready to play. It will be a great
test for our team and will defi
nitely help us down the road.”
Despite its struggles in dou
bles Monday night against
Pennsylvania, the team showed
a lot of championship qualities
in rallying for the victory.
“We came together as a team,
when our backs were to the wall,
and really fought through it,”
Vieria said. “We fought hard and
gave it all we had, and it was
enough in the end.”
Kleinecke said he loves the
qualities that his team displays
when the game is on the line.
“They’re never going to
give in,” Kleinecke said.
“They’re going to keep on
fighting and that’s what makes
this team special.”
Big 12
Continued from page 7
Johnson is in the top five of every offensive individual category
for the Big 12. Missouri head coach Quinn Snyder said Johnson
has been a large help in the Tigers’ recent games, but won’t be the
only factor on the court.
“If you look at our team numbers, our numbers are sound,”
Snyder said. “It’s a whole new situation at the tournament, though,
so we’re still going to have to show up and play well.”
To win, Watkins said, A&M will have to solve problems that
plagued it during the Jan. 10 game, as well as problems that have
plagued the team all season long. The Aggies shot 41 percent from
the floor against the Tigers, and the A&M defense often let Missouri
go on scoring runs, including a 20-to-6 run. During Big 12 play this
season, A&M has shot only 40 percent from the floor and is at the
bottom of every team defensive category except rebounding.
The Aggies are coming off an especially dismal 70-41 loss
against No. 7 Oklahoma State University Saturday, in which A&M
shot only 34 percent from the field and allowed OSU to go on three
runs of eight points or more.
Watkins said his announcement was due to the media’s recent
constant speculation of his job status, which might have been cloud
ing some of the player’s minds.
“Is there ever a good time to announce something like this? No.”
Watkins said. “I don’t want this to take away from what we have to
do, which is go out and beat Missouri.”
