try to get out to the community more to get voting out and famil
iarize people with the new machines. We did demonstrations at
nursing homes because the older people are freaking out (about
the new machines).”
Tax Office Chief Deputy Kristeen Roe said Precinct 20 in
Brazos County is made up of a majority of college students living
on campus.
Data from the March 12, 2003, election shows that less than 40
percent of the 5,246 people who registered to vote in the precinct
actually did.
Matt McCabe, a freshman general studies major, said he did)
know students had to be registered to vote in the county and
utes being uninformed to the small percentage of student voters.
“If someone isn't informed about an upcoming election —
running, what are the issues, etcetera, how can you really expi
them to be excited about voting?” McCabe said.
While the deadline has passed to register to vote in the
election, Kelley urges students to start registering for November
2004 presidential election.
“(Students at Prairie View A&M) are wanting to vote andean
and (A&M students) can vote and don’t” Kelley said.
