Wright threatens
to transfer if
Mins dismissed
COLLEGE STATION, Texas
(AP) - Texas A&M’s leading
scorer, Antoine Wright, says he
would probably try to transfer to
another school instead of
attempting to turn pro if coach
Melvin Watkins is dismissed.
The Aggies forward had
been averaging 14 points per
game, but is in the midst of a
disappointing individual and
overall season.
“I really don’t want to play for
another coach (at A&M), to be
honest with you," Wright told
The San Antonio Express-
News in Wednesday’s edi
tions. “That would be tough.
Coach Watkins has been
great for me, and he’s helping
me to get better.”
With A&M guaranteed a los
ing regular season and six
games remaining before the
Big 12 tournament begins on
March 11, Watkins could be in
the hot seat following the
tourney barring a turnaround
by the 7-14 Aggies. They are
0-10 in league play.
Wright, last year’s Big 12
Freshman of the Year, is shoot
ing only 35.7 percent from the
field and averaging 13 points
and 4.1 rebounds per game.
“It’s just unfortunate to put
that much pressure on a kid,
and surely as a coaching staff
we hope we didn’t contribute
to that,” Watkins said Tuesday
of Wright’s preseason hype.
“But I know we probably did,
because we had said,
‘Antoine, you’re our go-to
player this year.’"
Wright said that he realizes
the NBA likely isn’t an option
after this season, based on
the way he’s played so far.
“This year was kind of a
measuring stick to see how I
was and see how far I was
away from (the NBA),” he said.
“I just think it would be good for
me to come back (to school).”

Colorado coach
put on adminis
trative leave
Colorado head football
coach Gary Barnett has
been put on administrative
leave by Colorado president
Betsy Hoffman and chancel
lor Dr. Richard Byyny for his
remarks following the rape
allegations brought forth by
former Colorado place kicker
Katie Hnida.
Hnida has since transferred
to the University of New Mexico
where she is still a place kicker.
“His remarks were
extremely inappropriate and
insensitive,” Hoffman said.
“We believe it is appropriate
to put him on administrative
leave at this time.”
A final decision will not be
made until an investigation into
Hnida’s rape case is complete.
“The initial investigation will
end on April 30, and we will
make a decision at that time,”
Hoffman said. “Everyone’s job
is on the line.”
The allegations of rape
brought forth by Hnida is the
latest in a list of allegations
brought against Colorado’s
football program since the
season began. Other allega
tions include hiring strippers
and getting women to have
sex with recruits.
