Like “Return of the King,” Shore ends with a sweep and flourish worthy of one of the greatest trilogies of our time. His music contin ues to give the movie a feeling of authenticity, and he has clearly grown more in tune with Tolkien’s classic. His score continues in the same vein as the previous movies, but he has toned it down to the bare minimum. Shore relies more on the subtle shadings of nuance and mood to convey the movie’s atmospheres and auras. This works extremely well given Shore’s amazing ability to use music that resonates with one’s emotions and feelings. The entire album takes listeners deep into the psyche of the film, and it results in an endearing emotional rollercoaster ride. “Hit Ride of the Rohirrim” inspires, “End of Things” makes the listener despair, “Shell Lair” frightens and “Into the West” saddens ani fills the audience with longing. The entire score does an excellent jobol reaching out and grabbing the audience ei» tionally. Pippin Took’s (Billy Boyd) ami Aragorn’s (Viggo Mortenson) songs are simplt yet extremely moving, perhaps even the mosi moving parts of the film. Anne Lennox’s Oscai- nominated song “Into the West” gives a powei- ful ending performance that allows the movieio sail into memory as something more thanthelis- teners can understand. The entire scoreisatii umph and Howard Shore has done an amazingjol! bringing Middle Earth to life through his music. - Paul Coib\ Picture Courtesy of • NEW LINE CINEMA Frodo Baggins (Elijah Wood, left) and Samwise Gamji (Sean Astin, right) wait on Mt. (AP) — Actor Ben Affleck got the loudest ovation among the celebrities who attended the Daytona 500, but he also got some bad news. “They told me I was going to be bumped, and I was like ’bumped?’ What are you talking about bumped?
