THE BATTALIA
Lady netters face Rice in first home match of 2004 season
By Jon Gilbert
THE BATTALION
Most coaches wouldn’t be
thrilled with a 2-4 season
record, but Texas A&M
women’s head tennis coach
Bobby Kleinecke grins when
asked about his team’s record.
“We’re 2-4, but I’m pleased
about where we are,”
Kleinecke said. “They’ve been
through a tough road, and we
passed that test. They came
away believing in themselves.”
A&M can relax a little after
playing No. 9 Duke University,
No. 5 University of Southern
California, No. 3 University of
California and No. 8
Northwestern University. The
Aggies lost three of those
matches but reversed their luck
when they upset USC.
“(The win over USC) was
big,” Kleinecke said. “(The
team) came through in some
tough matches and got a win.”
Rice University visits the
George R Mitchell Tennis
Center on Saturday to take on
No. 19 A&M. First serve is
scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
Rice is ranked No. 62 in the
nation. The Owls upset then-
No. 40 Minnesota earlier this
season. Owl sophomore
Lauren Archer is the team’s
top player and is nationally
ranked in singles.
“Rice has a good team,”
Kleinecke said. “They will give us
a good test. It’ll be fun to be home,
not just home, but outdoors.”
A&M has not played a match
outdoors this season, and the
team expects the return to the
outdoors to play to its favor.
“For sure,” said senior Roberta
Spencer when asked if playing
outdoors would help. “We’ve all
grown up outdoors. Indoors might
have been a little bit of the reason
why we struggled.”
Overall, Kleinecke said he is
pleased with the team’s progress
and expects to see its play
improve late in matches.
“We are playing with high
intensity, along with great heart
and courage,” Kleinecke said.
“We were playing key points a
little better on that last day
(against Northwestern). You get
just one chance to take charge,
and when you have that chance
you need to take it.”
The Rice match this
Saturday will be the team’s first
against a non top-10 team this
month. However, the team
knows it cannot afford to take
Rice lightly.
“We’re ranked high now and
people are going to want to
come in and beat us,” Spencer
said. “We’re confident, and con
fidence is going to help us in
how we play.”
