Nelan has become much more than
just the typical student-athlete. For him,
the appropriate description would come
in the fonn of a conglomerate word like
student-ath lete- leader-pol i tician-com-
munity servant. A typical day for Nelan
begins at 5:30 a.m. and ends around
midnight. Throughout the course of the
Nelan
day, he spends six hours in the pool
and weight room combined, along with
attending classes and tending to his
duties as the president of the Student
Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).
Perhaps one of the more important
contributions that Nelan has made as
president of SAAC is negotiating with
Athletic Director Bill Byrne to get
football tickets for every athlete.
Previously only scholarship athletes
got football tickets; walk-ons were not

This used to mean that for teams
with a smaller number of scholarships,
such as the swim teams with only 9.5
scholarships for 24 athletes, many non
scholarship players would not be able
to get tickets. However, due to his
leadership in the negotiation process,
Nelan was able to ensure that every
athlete could get tickets and enjoy the
games.
Yet, despite his accomplishments,
Nelan is not one to toot his own horn.
He has plenty of people who do it for
him, including his girlfriend, Monica
Wuthrisch.
“Chris is probably the most deter
mined person I’ve ever met,”
Wuthrisch said. “If somebody tells him
he can’t do something, he goes out
there and does it just to prove them
wrong. His impairment is there but it
doesn’t hold him back. He’s obviously
overcome it.”

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - The Texas
Rangers claimed outfielder Jason Tyner
off waivers from Tampa Bay on
Monday.
Tyner, a Beaumont native who starred
at Texas A&M, hit .278 in 46 games for
the Devil Rays last season, playing most
in center field. He was a first-round pick
by the New York Mets in 1998.
