AUSTIN (AP) — Burnt
orange against the maize and
blue. Maybe a Mack Brown-
Bobby Bowden rematch is in
the works. Uga vs. Bevo?
No. 6 Texas (10-2) is in
position for an at-large bid for
the school’s first Bowl
Championship Series game,
and there are plenty of intrigu
ing matchups possible.
Of course, if Kansas State
somehow pulls off a huge upset
and beats Oklahoma in the Big
12 title game, the Longhorns
get bumped out of the BCS
altogether.
Assuming the planets stay in
their current alignment, here’s
a look at some potential
matchups for the Longhorns,
with the most likely destina
tions the Fiesta or Rose bowls.
—Florida State: Brown vs.
Bowden in the Fiesta. The
coaching matchup alone cata
pults this into a huge game for
the Longhorns.
Before he came to Texas,
Brown built North Carolina
from nothing into an Atlantic
Coast Conference title con
tender. The only thing standing
in his way was Saint Bobby (as
the locals call him) and some of
the greatest Florida State teams
Bowden has produced.
Bowden is Division I-A’s
winningest coach while Brown
has yet to win a conference
title, a dubious distinction the
Seminoles coach gets much of
the credit/blame for.
Brown finished an undistin
guished career as a running
back at Florida State, and a
Fiesta Bowl win over his alma
mater and ACC arch nemesis
would be one of the biggest of
Brown’s career.
It would also be the first
meeting between the schools.
Longhorns fans would no
doubt love making fun of
Florida State being a women’s
school from 1905 to 1947, the
year Blair Cherry coached
Texas to a 10-1 record and a
Sugar Bowl win over Alabama.
—Michigan: Talk about a
blockbuster matchup. While
Texas seems more likely head
ed to the Fiesta bowl, the possi
bility of a Texas-Michigan
Rose Bowl is too fun to not
think about.
The Longhorns and the
Wolverines would be a TV net
work’s dream. It would be the
first meeting ever between the
first (Michigan) and fourth
(Texas) winningest programs
of all time. The chance to see
Michigan’s famed striped hel
mets lined up across from the
Longhorns logo alone would be
worth watching.
Plus, the Texas and
Michigan traditions of Darrell
Royal, Earl Campbell, Bo
Schembechler and Tom
Harmon, North vs. South, etc.,
would generate stories for
weeks leading up to the game.
—LSU: A border battle in
the Fiesta and a tasty
Southeastern Conference-Big
12 matchup. It was a juicy
story line in last year’s Cotton
Bowl but hardly seems like it
would be much of an attention
grabber again.
While Texas would be giddy
about being in the BCS, the
Tigers are likely to be angry
about any scenario that leaves
them out of the Sugar Bowl and
a shot at the national title. LSU
would have the incentive of
trying to avenge last year’s loss
in the Cotton Bowl.
— Georgia: Another pairing
of tradition-steeped programs
that would be a Fiesta Bowl
mismatch in the mascot depart
ment. Bevo would squash Uga.
The steer must outweigh the
bulldog by about 2,000 pounds.
— Ohio State: Enough with
the tradition. Texas and Ohio
both like to claim to be the
most football-crazed state and a
Fiesta Bowl matchup would
help settle the argument.
So who produces better
players? The 2002 national
champion Buckeyes had two
players from Texas on their
roster. The Longhorns don’t
have any from Ohio.
SPORTS IN BRIEF
Red Sox make more
moves, hire new
coach Francona
The Red Sox hired Terry Francona
on Thursday, more than a month
after letting Grady Little go for failing
to get the last five outs Boston need
ed to vanquish the New York
Yankees and reach the World Series.
Francona, 44, was given a three-year
deal with an option for a fourth;
financial terms were not disclosed.
The son of a ballplayer, Francona
played 10 seasons for five major
league teams — he signed with a
sixth but never made it back to the
majors — and was Michael Jordan’s
manager at Double-A Birmingham
during the basketball star’s aborted
attempt to play baseball.
“I had a lot of experience, early
on, dealing with the biggest star,"
Francona said.
The Red Sox also interviewed Los
Angeles third-base coach Glenn
Hoffman, Anaheim bench coach
Joe Maddon and Texas first-base
coach DeMarlo Hale. But Francona
was established as an early front
runner, and his hiring was delayed
only by the team's pursuit of pitch
er Curt Schilling.
