Livas • THE BATTALION Texas A&M swimmer Chris Nelan competes at the Aggie Invitational in November. The Aggie men's swimming team is on the road this weekend against Purdue and Indiana, and the women's team is staying in College Station to host Kansas. By Pete Burks THE BATTALION With some much-needed rest over the Thanksgiving holidays, the Texas A&M men’s and women’s swimming teams will head into their last meets of the season looking to build upon their hard- earned successes from the A&M Invitational two weeks ago. After finishing second in the A&M Invitational, the women’s team (4-0, 2-0 Big 12) was rewarded, moving up in the rankings to No. 15 from No. 17. In addition, freshman Rebecca Sturdy, after earning her stripes with three first place finishes in the Invitational, became the NCAA leader in the 100- and 200-meter backstroke, as well as the 200 medley. “Rebecca had an outstanding meet, no question,” said Aggie women’s coach Steve Bultman. “She’s very talented and is doing a great job training, which shows up in the results at the meets.” Meanwhile, the men’s team (3-0, 1-0 Big 12), fell two spots to No. 15, even though it finished first in the A&M Invitational. All was not lost, however, as sen ior Matt Rose became the NCAA leader in the 50- meter freestyle, while ranking second in the 100- meter freestyle and sixth in the 100-meter backstroke. When the men hit the road to face Purdue and Indiana today and Saturday, respectively, the team .will be looking to show that its success at the Invitational was no fluke. “We were real pleased with the results of the Invitational, seeing as how we swam better than we thought we would,” said men’s coach Mel Nash. “Purdue and Indiana are pretty good, so it was good to catch some rest over the break. Purdue has been sur prisingly good this year, and they are much more bal anced than we thought they would be.” As for Indiana, heading to Bloomington will be a homecoming of sorts for Nash, as he was a member of the Indiana swim team that won six consecutive NCAA championships. “Indiana has had a slow start this year, but they are a team with a really strong swimming tradition,” Nash said. “Getting to go back up North is always fun, but especially when you’re facing your alma mater.” While the men are on the road this weekend, the Aggie women will face conference foe Kansas in the friendly confines of the A&M Student Recreation Center Natatorium. The women will be looking to continue their recent successes but to do so, they will have to fend off a vastly improved Kansas team. After a slow start to the season, the Jay hawks have rebounded mightily, finishing first in the Minnesota Invitational, which included No. 10 Wisconsin and No. 25 Minnesota. “Kansas is doing well right now, and they’re sure to be some good competition,” Bultman said. “They definitely are a team that we have to be ready to face.” On the road again Texas A&M sophomore Antoine Wright controls the ball against Prairie View A&M on Nov. 29. The Texas A&M men's JP Beato III • THE BATTALION basketball team will complete its two- game road swing Saturday against Oakland in Rochester, Mich., at 5 p.m. A&M to continue home slate against North Texas Staff & Wire THE BATTALION The Texas A&M women’s basket ball team continues a seven-game home stand on Saturday by hosting the North Texas Mean Green (3-2) at 2 p.m. at Reed Arena. A record 1,802 fans were on hand for the home debut of the coach Gary Blair era as the Aggies beat Arkansas-Little Rock by the score of 54-45 this past Wednesday night. Classen finished with 12 points, six rebounds and a career-matching best five blocked shots.
