Procrastination isn't a competition! im BY: M/IU U4Yt> Drive Continued from page 1 U.S. Cavalry, in an online newsletter Nov. 25. Junior political science major Lindsey Hafner stumbled upon news of the accident while searching for contact information of Aggie soldiers in Iraq. Hafner had planned to send letters of appreciation to the soldiers, but ended up organizing a food and supply drive after learning of the tire Wednesday afternoon. “1 really appreciate what they’re doing,” Hafner said. “This is my opportunity to just say thanks.” Donations will be collected Friday, Monday and Tuesday at Rudder Fountain and various locations off campus. Items need ed include T-shirts, lotion, baby wipes, reading materials, long underwear and candy and gum to hand out to local children. “We are critically short of longjohn underwear of all sizes,” Tway said in the newsletter. “We need these to fly at night, and right now it is holding us from accomplishing the mission.” Hafner also suggested donat ing snack items such as packets of Kool Aid, beef jerky and peanuts to make the soldiers feel more at home. “It doesn’t cost a lot for us to buy, but it means a lot to them,” she said. Collectors will accept any donations the troops may need, Hafner said, including monetary contributions. Any money received will be used to pur chase additional items or pay for postage, she said. “This is a great chance to show the Aggie spirit to soldiers who may not have seen it,” Hafner said. “It’s not a pro- or antiwar thing, it’s just helping those in need.” Tim Sweeney, associate direc tor of Student Activities, said he was contacted by Hafner to help with specifics of the project, such as obtaining a permit to solicit donations and finding businesses to use as drop-off locations. “It’s definitely a worthy cause,” Sweeney said. “I think she’ll get a good response." Sweeney helped student organizers of Red, White and Blue-Out in 2001, which raised funds for victims of the 9-11 ter rorist attacks. Aside from these two projects, he said, charitable efforts of this magnitude rarely come across his desk. The most difficult aspect of a project such as this, Sweeney said, is getting the word out. “People want to help; it’s nat ural to want to help,” he said. “They just want to know how.” Tway requested the aid of fel low Aggies to help the fire vic tims get back on their feet and enjoy the holidays. Any stock- ing-stuffer type of gifts would also be appreciated, he said. In true Aggie form, Tway joked, “Worst of all was the loss of our Stetsons!” Questions about the drive can be directed to Lindsay Hafner at 979-661-2305.
