K-State waiting for A&M
Wildcats can clinch Big 12 title with win
By Rob Phillips
THE BATTALION
Wednesday’s matchup
between the Texas A&M
women’s volleyball team and
fifth-ranked Kansas State fea
tures two teams headed toward
postseason play with fluctuating
momentum meters.
Following. Saturday’s first-
ever shutout loss to Kansas, the
No. 21 Aggies (20-8, 12-6) look
to avoid two consecutive losses
for the first time since early
October, when they dropped
consecutive games to Texas and
Kansas State.
Meanwhile, the Wildcats
(27-3, 17-1) captured a tie for
their first Big 12 title last
Saturday when they shut out
Texas Tech. K-State has won 15
straight and 27 of its last 28
since starting the season 0-2,
and a win against the Aggies
will clinch the Big 12 regular
season title for the Wildcats.
“This is a big step for our
program,” K-State coach Suzie
Fritz said of the Wildcats’ first
conference title. “Winning a title
for the first time in school histo
ry is a great accomplishment,
but we know we still have a lot
to play for next week.”
With the NCAA tournament
less than two weeks away, the
Aggies couldn’t ask for a better
pre-tournament test than a road
game against the newly-
crowned Big 12 Champion
Wildcats.
Clearly one of the hottest
teams in the nation, K-State can
improve its NCAA tournament
seeding with wins against A&M
and Texas in its final two con
ference games.
“It’s going to be a tough
match because we’ve never won
there before, but we really have
nothing to lose,” said A&M
junior Melissa Munsch.
“They’re the ones under all the
pressure that they have to beat us
because they won the Big 12.”
John C. Livas • THE BATTALION
Texas A&M sophomore outside hitter Laura Jones goes for a kill dur
ing the Aggies' game against Colorado in September.
The Wildcats dominated
Tech in their title-clinching
contest, out-hitting the Red
Raiders .333 to .087 in game
one while cruising to a 30-20,
30-28, 30-21 victory. Senior
Lauren Goehring led the
Wildcats with five blocks and
10 kills on .556 hitting, and
junior Valeria Hejjas tallied 13
kills on .370 hitting.
“K-State is a very big team in
that they block a lot of balls,”
Munsch said. “One of their big
strengths is blocking and a lot of
really quick attacking.”
Individual performances by
A&M senior Carol Price (10
kills on .529 hitting) and
Munsch (10 kills) weren’t
enough against Kansas last
Saturday. The Jayhawks out
played A&M from start to fin
ish, out-hitting the Aggies .338
to .228 and posting 69 kills to
the Aggies’ 40.
Price said beating the
Wildcats could mean a higher
tournament seed when the
brackets come out Sunday, but
the Aggie seniors are especially
motivated because it’s their last
chance to win in Manhattan, a
goal they have yet to meet.
“It’s a big personal motiva
tion and a team motivation to go
in there, play really good vol
leyball and take it to them,”
Price said.
Wednesday’s match is sched
uled for 7 p.m. at Ahearn Field
House in Manhattan, Kan.
Hall-of-Famer Spahn dead at 82
By Clayton Bellamy
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
BROKEN ARROW, Okla. — Warren Spahn,
the Hall of Fame pitcher who won more games
than any other left-hander in history, died
Monday. He was 82.
Spahn died at his home, fam
ily friend Gary Caruso said.
Spahn was the mainstay of
the Braves’ pitching staff for
two decades, first in Boston and
then in Milwaukee. He pitched
for 21 seasons, winning 363
games and posting 20 or more
victories 13 times.
The remarkable part was that
he was 25 before he got his first major league win.
“Warren Spahn was a fighter and a winner,”
said New York Yankees manager Joe Torre, a for
mer teammate. “He made catching in the big
leagues a lot easier for me because he took me
SPAHN
under his wing along with Lew Burdette. One of
my biggest thrills to this day was catching his
300th victory in 1961.”
Spahn started his baseball career in his home
town of Buffalo, playing first base while his father
played third for the Buffalo Lake City Athletic
Club. He wanted to play first in high school but his
team already had an all-city player at that position.
So Spahn switched to pitching.
He signed with the Braves in 1940 for $80 a
month and injured his arm twice in his first sea
son of D-level ball. But he won 19 games the
next season and was invited to spring training
with the Braves.
He started the 1942 season with the Braves but
was sent down by manager Casey Stengel, who
was angry because the left-hander refused to brush
back Pee Wee Reese in an exhibition game. Spahn
went 17-12 with a 1.96 ERA average at Hartford
that season while the Braves finished in seventh
place. Stengel called farming Spahn out the worst
mistake he ever made.
