A large part of this team’s success will lie with two newcomers at the point guard position. Junior college transfer Bobby Leach and freshman Acie Law IV will see time at the point. Leach’s style is to control the offense and work the ball to the open man while Law provides a good change of pace with a faster, penetrate-and- dish style of play. Both will kill opponents on the scoreboard as well if teams decide to defend the pass too heavily. “With both of those guys you see something different,” Wright said. “Bobby is more of a con trol type of point guard, he’s more mature. Acie is a more exciting player. Both of those guys are going to bring change in the game.” Another area where new starters will have to step up is in the front court. The Aggies had problems last season keeping up on the boards against Big 12 opponents. Returning seniors Andy Slocum and Jesse King will have to con- Women’s Continued from page 6 optimistic about the team’s chances this year and hopes to repeat the defensive success of last year “We expect to be the best defensive team in the league,” Williams said. “We want to lead the con ference in steals again.” trol the paint for the Aggies to be successful in the rugged Big 12. Keep an eye on sophomore Luis Clemente and freshman Marlon Pompey coming off the bench for Slocum and King. Clemente served as a partial qualifier last season, able to practice with the team but ineligible to participate in games. He impressed coaches and teammates in Italy by averaging a double-double in scoring and rebounding during the team’s five games. “It’s real exciting (to finally play in games),” Clemente said. “I want to work hard and help my team.” With depth and talent at each position, A&M seems to finally have the pieces in place to make a run at the top six of the Big 12 for the first time since the inception of the conference in 1996. A top six finish would almost guarantee the Aggies of their first postseason appearance in more than a decade. “I just like what this team represents right now and the work ethic they’re giving up,” Watkins said. “I think our fans are going to like what they see.” Williams was one of the top point guards in the nation last season, leading the Big 12 in steals and becoming the fifth Big 12 player to record more than 800 points and 500 assists. She was a member of the USA Basketball World University Games Team that traveled to South Korea this summer. The Aggies will travel to the Bahamas Nov. 28 to play two games before returning to College Station to face Arkansas-Little Rock Dec. 3.Pg. BCS STANDINGS 1. Oklahoma 1.80 2. Ohio State 7.52 3.
