Sweet 16

the end,” Spisak said. “I just knew I had to keep on the defense and
tell them what I wanted them to do. I just did what I could to help
my team to win.”
The win was Guerrieri’s 200th victory of his career, and it sends
the Aggies to State College, Penn., to play No. 5-seeded Penn State
Saturday.
With the defense playing at its top form and the re-emergence
of Probst in the midfield, the Aggies have a bright future in the
tournament.
“I think there’s a saying that adversity brings out character,”
Guerrieri said. “All adversity does is it exposes the character the
players already have. It’s become an expectation of the people who
know our program not to just get a season that’s great enough to get
you into the NCAA Tournament, but you’re going to get in the
Sweet 16.”
Missouri
Continued from page 5
yards, failing to throw for 100
yards for just the second time
this season.
He eclipsed the 1,000-yard
rushing mark for the second
straight year, becoming the first
player in school history to rush
for 1,000 yards in two separate
seasons.
Senior running back Zack
Abron led Missouri with 141
yards on the ground. Abron’s
rushing touchdown gave him the
school record for total points
scored with 234 and 39 touch
downs in his career.
Abron’s backup, sophomore
Damien Nash, added 65 yards
and two touchdowns on the
ground for the Tigers, who fin
ished with 362 total rushing
yards as a team.
Nash said most of the credit
should go to the offensive line
for creating the holes to run
through.
“When they’re on point,
nobody can stop us,” Nash said.
“It’s unbelievable with Brad,
myself and Zack, I don’t think a
defense can stop us.”
The Aggie defense didn’t
help matters, missing tackles
that turned into big plays for
Missouri.
Sophomore safety Jaxson
Appel summed it up after
another disappointing outing
for the Aggies.
“It’s frustrating,” Appel said.
Even after the Aggie defense
stopped the Tigers on three con
secutive drives in the first half,
Appel didn’t feel much better
about it.
“That’s always better than
letting them score another
touchdown,” he said. “It’s a step
up but a loss is still a loss
whether it’s by 100 or by two.”
SPORTS IN BRIEF
Texans hold off
Bills for 12-10 win
ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) -
Tony Banks keeps making a case
that he’s capable of being an NFL
starter again. The Buffalo Bills’
banged-up and inept Drew
Bledsoe-led offense could’ve used
him Sunday.
Filling in for injured starter
Davis Carr, Banks outdid Bledsoe,
sparking the Houston Texans to a
12-10 victory.
Despite playing only three quar
ters after Carr bruised his right
shoulder 10 minutes into the
game, Banks finished with 207
yards passing to Bledsoe's 184.
And, more important, Banks engi
neered more touchdown drives —
one — than Bledsoe has managed
in his last three outings.
As the Texans (4-6) celebrated
matching their win total from last
year’s expansion season, the Bills
(4-6) were left shell-shocked after
losing their sixth in eight games.
“I’m so mad. I don’t know what to
do,” Bledsoe said. “There have
been times when offenses 1 have
been on have struggled ... but I
can’t recall a time when we went
three games without a touchdown.”
It didn’t help that the Bills were
without leading receiver Eric
Moulds (groin injury) and running
back Travis Henry played the sec
ond half with a broken right leg.
Besides losing Carr, who will
have an MRI exam Monday, the
Texans were minus three defen
sive starters. Cornerback Marcus
Coleman and backup linebacker
Antwan Peek was suspended for
an unspecified violation, and didn't
travel with the team.
South Africans win
golf World Cup
KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. (AP) -
South Africa’s Trevor Immelman
and Rory Sabbatini combined to
shoot a 1-over-par 73 Sunday for a
four-stroke victory at the World Cup.
Immelman and Sabbatini fin
ished at 13-under 275 and gave
South Africa its second World
Cup title in three years and fifth
overall. Ernie Els and Retief
Goosen teamed up to win in
2001, when the World Cup was
played in Japan.
The U.S. team of Jim Furyk and
Justin Leonard were in contention
until going bogey-triple bogey at
Nos. 12 and 13. The Americans
shot a 3-over 75 and finished in a
tie for fifth at 4-under 284.
The South Africans, who each
earned $700,000 for the win,
started the alternate-stroke round
with a seven-stroke lead over Furyk
and Leonard and France's Thomas
Levet and Raphael Jacquelin
But it was England’s Paul Casey
and Justin Rose who made a
charge for the lead. Ten strokes
back at the start of the round, the
Englishmen shot a 5-under 67 and
settled for second at 9-under 279.
