Sure, the Aggies have the toughest schedule in college football
and they’re trying to traverse it with a young and inexperienced
team while trying to learn a new system from a new coaching staff.
But 77-0? That’s just embarrassing.
“You don’t expect this,” Stoops said. “It’s a very strange situa
tion to be in, even in the middle of the third quarter. You do the best
you can to manage it, and I always believe in respecting the people
we’re playing against regardless of who it is.”
Granted, the loss was to the No. 1 team in America, but this is
Texas A&M, a school rich in football tradition. Has it really gotten
this low? Yes.
But Franchione’s resume shows that he is used to rebuilding pro
grams and he’s had plenty of success doing so.
This turnaround is going to take work by Franchione and his
staff, and if it is successfully done, it will be his finest yet.

Aggies roil through
competition, set
new team record
STILLWATER, Okla.- The Texas
A&M English riders opened their
season by setting a new team
point record at Animal Science
Arena on Saturday.
The Aggies cracked the 40-
point barrier for the first time
ever in a 43-40 defeat of host
Oklahoma State. West Texas
A&M topped Louisiana State 27-
19 for third place.
“I was really happy to see how
they worked as a team,” A&M
English coach Pamela Bruemmer
said. “Our support and prepara
tion was great. I expect that to
continue throughout the season.”
Two-time defending regional
high point rider Meredith Houx
captured the first high point rider
honor of the year after posting
wins in both open flat and open
fences. Junior Amanda Dougherty
and sophomore Laura Massey
tied for reserve high point honors.
“Laura Massey did awesome,"
Bruemmer said. “She came out
and rode like a superstar.
Meredith (Houx) was even more
on her game than usual. She has
great confidence when she enters
the ring and it shows."
Massey, a novice rider who also
happens to be a member of the
Corps of Cadets, shined in her
Aggie debut, capturing first place
on the flat and second place
over fences.
Senior Andrea Hanson, a
national qualifier in intermediate
fences a year ago, won her first-
ever open fences section.
Junior Melissa Loontjer earned
a win in the third section of
novice flat. Loontjer, the regional
and zone champion in advanced
walk-trot-canter a year ago, has
adjusted admirably to the more
difficult division, having scored
19 points in three rides at the
novice level.
Freshman Erica Palomo rebound
ed from a difficult draw in the inter
mediate fences class to win her flat
class later on in the day.
Senior Ashley Ferguson earned
a fifth place finish in her section
of advanced walk-trot-canter to
qualify for the regional champi
onships scheduled for College
Station on March 28.

archerers finish the
weekend on top
Texas A&M All-Americans
Lorinda Cohen and Amber
Dawson finished their respective
weekends with the lead in the
recurve and compound divisions
at the 2003 Aggie Invitational on
Saturday morning but each must
hold off world compound champi
on Mary Zorn in order to be
named tournament champion.
Cohen started her senior sea
son off by turning in her best-ever
Aggie Invitational score in the
recurve division. The 2000 Aggie
Invitational champion leads fresh
man Corinne Yohann, 1,111-
1,095, for first place but must
wait until teammate Mary Zorn
finishes her first-ever recurve
tournament before being officially
named the winner. Zorn needs to
shoot a score of 571 or better in
the second half of her round to tie
Cohen. The Warrenville, III.,
native shot a score of 540 on
Friday night in her initial effort
with the new bow. Should Zorn
maintain her current pace of 540,
she will finish in third place
ahead of fellow senior Anne
Gordon who finished her round
with a total of 1,073.
Yohann’s score of 1,095 ranks
her No. 5 on the all-time A&M list
after only one tournament. Senior
Anne Gordon (1,073, 8th all-time)
and junior Laura Duke (1,065,
10th all-time) also turned in
career bests this weekend.
The compound side features a
tight battle between two of the
world’s top archers. Junior
Amber Dawson leads Zorn, the
outdoor world record holder, 581-
579, at both archers' halfway
point. However, Dawson turned in
a final score of 1,155 meaning
Zorn needs to shoot a score of
575 or better to capture sole pos
session of first place.
Dawson’s score of 1,155 is the
second-best indoor score of her
Aggie career. Her career score
was an 1,159
