Working on a limited budget, director Tobe Hooper originally shot this movie on 16mm film that was later blown up for the atrical release. This cost effective technique heavily influenced the look of the film. It resulted in a movie with an added realistic feeling which aided in its resemblance to a documentary. “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” is a straightforward story that follows five teenagers on a road trip across Texas that goes terribly wrong. Group members unwillingly become victims of Leatherface, a chainsaw-wielding madman who fancies wearing other people’s skin. The relatively straightforward plot forces the viewer to focus on the horror at play. This film was groundbreaking because it introduced a new approach to presenting horror in an otherwise dull and repetitive genre. Another attraction of the movie is that the villain is not a typical fake Hollywood monster such as Frankenstein or the mummy, but instead a demented human being. A human villain brings plausibility to the story, making it scarier. Another way this movie strives for reality is the movement of the camera, which suggests to the audience that this film was shot by an amateur. “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” sets the trend for “slasher” films such as “Friday the 13th” because of the sheer brutality of its murder sequences. It also has aspects of psychological thrillers such as “Silence of the Lambs” and “Psycho” because its dwelling on moments of eerie silence. The characters are deliberately developed poorly, giving the audience a sense of indifference when each of them dies. The film is less concerned with storytelling and instead is more con cerned with depicting death in a realistic light, devoid of any romantic notions. The purpose of “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” is not to inspire or articulate, but to excite and frighten the audience. By today’s standards, this film may be considered bland in terms of blood and gore, but the film communicates its horror on a much deeper level. This influential film is still a worth a view ing for its sheer educational value and importance to the horror genre. — Jose Cruz The Texas Chainsaw Massacre New Line Cinema 2003 Acclaimed music video and commercial director Marcus Nispel makes his feature film debut with in a remake of the 1974 film “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.” Although the movie’s cast includes “7th Heaven” star Jessica Biel, the real star is Leatherface, the chain saw-wield® madman who has served as the template for horror villains since 1974. The basic plot structure of the reincarnated version is identi cal to the original movie. It follows a group of teenagers ona road trip across Texas. Somew here along the trip, they wander off the straight higli way and slip into a downward spiral of terror into pure evil. The teenagers come across various members of a family called the Hewitts. Then, they meet Leatherface and his chain saw. This remake accomplishes the rare feat of being an improve ment on the original. The 1974 version was meant, above allto scare the audience. The remake raises the ante on the horror aspect. This film does what all good horror films do — it leaves an impressionii your mind. Some memorable shots are so horrific and gruesome they stay with you long after you leave the movie theater. The cine matography is vivid and brutal, and the action is spastic and chaotic. The vicious style of the movie’s filmmaking can best be described by its pacing. After the opening credits, the film quickly settles into a frantic pace, gradually escalates to a freo zy and ends at a hysterical rate, never giving the viewer a chance to breathe. This film hangs viewer son a figurative meat hook, playfully yet maliciously poking at their mental state, causing themanxi ety and mental anguish throughout. Another aspect of the movie that makes it an effective remalit is its ability to take stylistic elements from the original and amplify them for a jaded 21st century audience. The best way to describe this movie is a 90-minute longanxi ety attack. Pregnant women and people with heart problems should watch with discretion. - Jose Ci B; THE .
