THE BATTALION A quick glance at the Aggies’ boxscore from last Friday night’s sweep of Oklahoma would send up a few red flags for Aggie volleyball faithful. Only one player put up double digit kills, sophomore Laura Jones, managed just five and conspicuously absent junior Melissa Munsch did not play because of an injury.. All of those stats are not the usual ingredients in an especially during the Big 12 portion of the schedule. Nonetheless, the women came together and notched an impor tant victory, the 250th of coach Laurie Corbelli’s tenure at Texas A&M and a win that extended their current streak to four games, pro pelling them to their highest national ranking in more than a year at No. 21. “I’m always proud when I hit a milestone,” Corbelli said. “The longevity, and the coach’s sani ty, isn’t very long sometimes. I’m really proud to be at Texas A&M, and I want to get to 300 with a strong team and keep the program as strong as it is.” The next step toward 300 begins tonight in Waco for the Aggies (14-5, 6-3) and Corbelli as they get set to take on a Jekyll and Hyde-like Baylor team that has caused fits for some of the top teams in the nation while at other times struggling with the lightweights. “A few things contribute (the ups and downs),” said Baylor coach Brian Hosfeld. “Partially our youth, we’re a young team and our older kids are playing in new positions, but part of it is just the way the game is played now with rally scoring ... it’s tough to stay consistent.” The Bears’ (11-11, 3-6) unpredictable nature is nowhere more obvious than their match against No. 8 Kansas State on Sept. 24. The women put away the Wildcats in four games, giving Baylor its first win over a ranked opponent in nearly three years. But since then, the Bears have lost to Oklahoma and struggled against Texas Tech, which is u We are preparing to go in and play them like they are at their top level... — Beth Skypala Aggie senior outside hitter still winless in Big 12 play. Baylor snuck by the Red Raiders in five games in Lubbock. “They seem to be sometimes really up and sometimes not as up,” Corbelli said. “It’s very hard to prepare for ... but they are bigger and stronger than ever before, they’ve got a lot to prove from having a down season to proving now that the program is still very strong.” Senior outside hitter Beth Skypala said they are not tak ing anything for granted against the Bears. “We are preparing to go in and play them like they are at their top level and no matter where they are in their game we are expecting to bring our high est game,” she said. Skypala has stepped forward during the Aggies’ current four-game win streak. She has led the team in the last two matches with kills, a stretch that included her career high against Kansas when she knocked down 28. “It’s all come together,” Skypala said said. “Getting in a rhythm with volleyball (is important), and I really feel like I’m there right now.” Munsch was held out of last Friday’s match against Oklahoma as a precaution fol lowing a run-in with the hard wood against Kansas last Wednesday. Munsch was exhibiting the tell-tale signs of a mild con cussion after the match, result ing in a scratch in the Oklahoma match. Munsch was back at practice Monday and was cleared to play against Baylor in Waco. The slight injury did give the Aggies another opportunity to work some fresh legs into the lineup, which was a bit of a lux ury for Corbelli. “The depth comes in handy for coaches like us who are spoiled with great talent all around,” Corbelli said. “When (some of the younger players) need to go in they have been doing a beautiful job, I was real ly impressed.” The Aggies have won seven straight against Baylor dating back to 1999. The match is set for 7 p.m. at the Ferrell Center in Waco. SPORTS IN BRIEF McNair to face grand jury for drunk driving NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Steve McNair’s case on drunken driving and weapons charges will go to a grand jury. Judge Leon Ruben ruled Tuesday that there was sufficient evidence for the case against the Tennessee Titans' quarterback to move forward. The grand jury could convene in four to five weeks, according to the district attorney’s office. McNair, the NFL’s top-rated quarterback who has led the Titans to a 5-2 record, left with his lawyer after the hearing Tuesday and did not talk to reporters. McNair was pulled over by police while driving a sport utility vehicle in Nashville just after midnight May 22. *0* K Better Ingredients • Better Pizza 1 Extra Large ^ Hopping MONDAY TUESDAY WEDNESDAY THURSDAY FRIDAY SATURDAY SUNDAY 1 LARGE l-TOPPING $C 99 pu/only 2 LARGE 1-TOPPING $12" ■ pu/delivery 1 EX-LARGE 1 1 LARGE 2-TOPPING 2-TO pp ING & 2 liter dnnk $ I0. 50 Pi 99 * pu/delivery 1 I 1 • pu/delivery PICK YOUR SIDE LARGE 2TOPPING AND 1 SIDE $|7 78 1 Mm% pu/delivery FAMILY SPECIAL 1 LARGE SPECIALTY 1 LARGE 2 TOPPING $ \6.” ANY LARGE SPECIALTY HI.” Northgate 601 University Dr. 979-846-3600 Post Oak Square Center 100 Harvey Rd., Suite D 979-764-7272 Rock Prairie 1700 Rock Prairie 979-680-0508 Sunday: 1 1 a.m. - midnight Monday - Wednesday: t 1 a.m. - 1 Thursday: 1 t a.m. - 2 a.m. Friday & Saturday: 1 1 a.m. - 3 a.
