Show-up Continued from page 5 yards rushing last week against Colorado, the Baylor running game llie Bears were limited to a meager 32 rushing yards Saturday by the Aggie defense. In addition, after being humbled to the tune of giving up more than 500 yards passing last week, the Aggie secondary blanketed the Baylor receivers, limiting Baylor to 138 yards receiving. Last but not least, the front seven harassed Baylor quarterback Aaron Karas all day, never giving him time to set his feet and find his receivers. Before all was said and done, the A&M defense had racked up six sacks. Through all the turmoil of the Aggies’ three-game losing streak, one thing remained consistent: the play of sophomore free safety Ja/son Appel. Saturday was no different as Appel was all over the field, recording five tackles and a 64-yard interception return for a toochdown that helped cement the Aggie win. “It was a good win for us, I think we needed it,” Appel said. “The main thing we did is we came out and we didn’t let them back in the game. Our whole goal all week was to stop their first drive in the third quarter. We came out and we did that, and we are pretty excited about that.” If anything, Saturday proved to be a day of redemption for the Aggie defense, which is still trying to earn the coveted Wrecking Crew title. Aggie defenders proved they still have it in them to go out and dominate an opposing offense, a mentality they must keep to sur vive a brutal conference schedule. In the coming weeks, the Aggies will face the likes of Nebraska, Oklahoma, and of course Texas, not to mention conference upstarts Oklahoma State, Kansas and Missouri. But for now, the defense can take comfort in knowing it can still play. Aggies Continued from page 5 The A&M passing game was t as successful. In the third quarter. McNeal put an excla mation point on the blowout victory when he hit wide receiver Jamaar Taylor for a yard touchdown, the Aggies’ longest reception in more than two years. “It was bad and went to worse,” said Baylor coach Guy Morriss. “It looks like (A&M) woke up. They just whipped our We didn’t play very well, we didn’t execute very well, we didn’t tackle well, we didn’t cover well and it just got away from us.” Taylor finished the game with 145 receiving yards and two touchdowns, while McNeal went 9-of-14 passing for 199 yards. “This was a key game for us, knowing that Baylor beat Colorado last week,” Taylor said. “This was a big win for us.” Things will not get any easier the rest of the way for the Aggies, who own the nation’s toughest remaining schedule. A&M will try to continue mov ing forward next week when it travels to Lincoln to face Nebraska. The win was the first Big 12 road victory of the season for the Aggies (12-5, 4-3 Big 12). The Cyclones fall to 9-9 and 2- 6 in the league. A&M started out quickly by jumping out to a 19-10 lead in the first game. Sophomore Laura Jones eventually fin ished the game with a kill, and the Aggies posted a .390 hit ting percentage and held the Cydones to a .083. After Iowa State won game three, A&M went on an 11-1 scoring streak in game four to take firm command of the match. Melissa Munsch led the Aggies in the match with 16 kills, and Beth Skypala added 15 kills and a team-high 18 digs. Skypala also led A&M with a .367 hitting percentage. The Aggies outblocked the Cyclones 12-8 and also posted 18 more digs. A&M returns to action Wednesday when it hosts the Kansas Jayhawks at 7 p.m. Late FG gives Dallas win over Eagles IRVING, Texas (AP) — Add beating the Philadelphia Eagles to the list of things the Dallas Cowboys can do under Bill Parcells that they couldn’t the last few years. Randal Williams foiled a game-opening onside kick by returning it 37 yards for a touch down and Billy Cundiff kicked a 28-yard field goal with 1:11 left to give the Cowboys a 23-21 victory over the Eagles on Sunday, ending a six-game los ing streak to their division rivals. Dallas had lost those games by an average of 25 points and hadn’t scored an offen sive touchdown in the last three. That made this matchup a key early season test for Parcells. With a fourth straight win, the Cowboys improved to 4-1 for the first time since 1995 and remain alone atop the NFC East. Dallas goes to Detroit next week with a chance to match its win total from each of the last three seasons. McNair hands Texans 38-17 loss NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — The Tennessee Titans are hard to beat when Steve McNair is nearly perfect. McNair had a perfect quarter back rating in the first half, fin ished with a career-high 421 yards passing and threw three touchdowns to Derrick Mason as the Titans routed the Houston Texans 38-17 on Sunday. The Titans (4-2) returned home for their only game in Nashville in October deter mined to erase the memory of last week’s loss at New England. It wasn’t hard against Houston (2-3) as Tennessee also intercepted three passes, returning one for a touchdown. Erron Kinney dropped McNair’s first pass on the Titans’ second play, but McNair completed his next 12.
