to persuade minorities to come
here and change the perception
that minorities are not welcome
at A&M.
“It is simply unacceptable for
Texas A&M’s student bodytobe
85 percent white,” Gates said.
Gates also discussed tlie
importance of building space in
the University’s goal of
improvement.
He cited Wehner’s new Cot
wing and the new Chemical
Engineering building, but said
A&M must develop a way to
expand, especially with the
increase of faculty members.
Gates explained his new ini
tiative of the creation of the
Honor Council and Honor
System to enforce the Aggie
Code of Honor.
Stephanie James, senior
mechanical engineering major,
said she agreed with Gates'
address and thinks the Honor
System is necessary.
“Dr. Gates is definitely tak
ing us in the right direction,”
James said. “1 commend Dr.
Gates for the return of the Aggie
Code of Honor.”
The convocation recognized
recently hired tenure and
tenured-track professors along
with professors who had been
promoted in the past year.
University of Michigan
President Emeritus James J.
Duderstadt, who keynoted A&M's
“Vision 2020” kickoff program
three days ago, spoke on current
trends of higher education.
During closing, Gates referred
to himself as an “agent for
change” and is ready for the
process ahead.
“What is the state of the
University?” Gates said. “It is in
a state of dramatic change.
Changes will transform A&M for
the next several years.”

He was also asked about his
feelings toward former U.S.
President Ronald Reagan, who
also played a role in the conclu
sion of the Cold War.
“(Reagan) was frequently
underestimated and misinter
preted,” Kohl said.
In regard to Germany’s will
ingness to become a part of the
UN Security Council, Kohl said
that while he was not represen
tative of the opinions of the gov
ernment or people of Germany,
attempting to join would bring
trouble.
“The Federal Republic of
Germany won’t disappear
because it’s not a part of the
council,” Kohl said.
Kohl emphasized the impor
tance of the Gennan-American
relationship, saying both coun
tries have a common history and
a common advantage.
“I cannot see any reason,”
Kohl said, “why there should be
division between Germans and
Americans.”
