Gray THE ASSOCIATED PRESS NEW YORK — The Dave Matthews band kept tens of thousands of fans on their feet at a free concert in Central Park as part of a fund-raiser for music programs in the nation’s largest public school system. The concert was sponsored by America Online, which has held other fund-raisers and donated $1 million to New York City schools. AOL handed out 70,000 free tickets before the concert through its Web site and on the streets. With its brand of funk, jazz and worldbeat fusion, the band entertained the crowd with hits like “Where are You Going" and “Two Step." Charlton Heston. The American Film Institute announced Wednesday it has presented Heston with the new award named in his honor, intended to acknowledge people who have made distin guished contributions to movies and television and the AFI itself. Heston, who has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, received the award at his home Tuesday. “For decades, he has been a major presence in movies and television around the world, and his strong spirit of commitment to AFI lives on through this honor,” said Howard Stringer, AFI board chairman. Heston, who turns 80 next week, was AFI board chairman from 1971-82 and AFI presi dent from 1983-2002. He also was president of the Screen Actors Guild from 1965-71. Heston won the best actor Academy Award for 1959’s “Ben-Hur” and received an honorary Oscar in 1978 for his humanitarian efforts.
