NEWS IN BRIEF Justice alerted to false testimony WASHINGTON (AP) - Less than two weeks before Timothy McVeigh was executed, the Justice Department received a letter suggesting a key prosecu tion witness had given false tes timony. Prosecutors didn't dis close the allegations to McVeigh's lawyers and later sought to recover all copies of the letter in exchange for a law suit settlement. The letter, marked "urgent," was sent by fax and courier to the attention of Attorney General John Ashcroft on June 1, 2001, by a law firm repre senting several current and for mer FBI lab employees. At the time, a judge was deciding whether to delay McVeigh's execution because of evident; the government withheldfa his trial. The letter's allegatii involved Steven Burmefa now the FBI lab's chief of scien tific analysis, and were recenl 1 ! turned over to bombing conspf ator Terry Nichols, who face another trial on Oklahoma sli; murder charges.
