House rejects bill for
red-light camera policing
AUSTIN (AP) — Big
Brother suffered a loss in Texas
on Monday.
A measure that would have
allowed cities to place cameras
at traffic-light intersections to
catch red-light runners and
mail a fine to registered owners
of the vehicle in violation once
again failed in the
Texas House.
Opponents argued that the
measure would be a “cash-
cow” for local governments
and the camera companies and
would encroach on motorists’
privacy rights.
Rep. Phil King, R-
Weatherford, who sponsored
the bill, argued that red-light
runners are a serious problem
in Texas, where they are
responsible for 20,000 deaths
and injuries every year.
“This is a bill that eveiv
