SPORTS IN BRIEF Men’s tennis to close Big 12 against Texas The No. 10 Texas A&M men's tennis team will return to the A&M Varsity Tennis Center this weekend to take on the No. 16 University of Texas in the team’s final Big 12 regular season matchup. The Aggies (20-7) are coming off a tough loss to No. 6 Baylor that eliminated the team from the Big 12 regular season race. In the contest, senior Ryan Newport defeated the No. 1 play er in the nation, Benedikt Dorsch, in straight sets to become the first A&M tennis player to defeat the top player in the nation since 1996. The Bears clinched the regular season title with the win. The Aggies will be battling for second place in the conference when they take the court on Saturday. The Longhorns' (14-5) last action was Saturday against Nebraska, where the team posted a shutout over the Cornhuskers. Texas has now won 11 of its last 13 matches and is led by senior All-Americans Jean Simon and Jimmy Haney. First serve in the match is sched uled for 4 p.m. Women’s tennis set for Kansas road trip The No. 30 A&M women’s ten nis team will close out its regular season this weekend with a pair of matches against Big 12 rivals from Kansas. The Aggies will travel to Manhatten, Kan. on Friday to take on the Kansas State Wildcats before traveling to Lawrence on Sunday to battle the University of Kansas Jayhawks. A&M’s last action was a road vic tory against Texas on Tuesday, where the Aggies claimed the dou bles point and the first three matches to clinch the victory early before falling in super tiebreakers on the final three courts. The victory kept the Aggies (15- 9, 7-2 Big 12) alive in the Big 12 regular season race going into the final week of the season. Baylor leads the conference with an 8-1 Big 12 record. “The conference race is still in shambles,” said A&M Head Coach Bobby Kleinecke. “The only thing we can be concerned with is taking care of our business and winning out matches.” First serve is set for 2 p.m. Friday in Manhatten and for noon Saturday in Lawrence.
