SPORTS IN BRIEF
Men’s tennis to close
Big 12 against Texas
The No. 10 Texas A&M men's
tennis team will return to the A&M
Varsity Tennis Center this weekend
to take on the No. 16 University of
Texas in the team’s final Big 12
regular season matchup.
The Aggies (20-7) are coming off
a tough loss to No. 6 Baylor that
eliminated the team from the Big
12 regular season race.
In the contest, senior Ryan
Newport defeated the No. 1 play
er in the nation, Benedikt Dorsch,
in straight sets to become the
first A&M tennis player to defeat
the top player in the nation since
1996.
The Bears clinched the regular
season title with the win. The
Aggies will be battling for second
place in the conference when they
take the court on Saturday.
The Longhorns' (14-5) last action
was Saturday against Nebraska,
where the team posted a shutout
over the Cornhuskers.
Texas has now won 11 of its last
13 matches and is led by senior
All-Americans Jean Simon and
Jimmy Haney.
First serve in the match is sched
uled for 4 p.m.
Women’s tennis set
for Kansas road trip
The No. 30 A&M women’s ten
nis team will close out its regular
season this weekend with a pair of
matches against Big 12 rivals
from Kansas.
The Aggies will travel to
Manhatten, Kan. on Friday to take
on the Kansas State Wildcats
before traveling to Lawrence on
Sunday to battle the University of
Kansas Jayhawks.
A&M’s last action was a road vic
tory against Texas on Tuesday,
where the Aggies claimed the dou
bles point and the first three
matches to clinch the victory early
before falling in super tiebreakers
on the final three courts.
The victory kept the Aggies (15-
9, 7-2 Big 12) alive in the Big 12
regular season race going into the
final week of the season.
Baylor leads the conference with
an 8-1 Big 12 record.
“The conference race is still in
shambles,” said A&M Head Coach
Bobby Kleinecke. “The only thing
we can be concerned with is taking
care of our business and winning
out matches.”
First serve is set for 2 p.m. Friday
in Manhatten and for noon Saturday
in Lawrence.
