the battal: Sports The Battalion Page IB • Thursday, April 17, 2003 ggies sweep doubleheader By Pete Burks THE BATTALION After a long road trip to Kansas last eekend, the No. 18 Texas A&M softball am (32-14) was more than ready for its midweek home games. In a non-con- erence doubleheader with Texas A&M- brpus Christi, the Aggies showed no signs )f relinquishing their home field domi- ance, defeating the Islanders (24-17) 7-0 n the first game and 6-1 in the second. In the first game, the Aggies got a boost romjunior pitcher Jessica Slataper (11-10), vho led the defense with five strong innings if pitching, striking out five hitters and valking none. Offensively for the Aggies, sophomore :econd baseman Adrian Gregory blasted wo home runs off Islander pitcher Sarah ^auly, going two for four with two RBIs. ienior shortstop Crystal Martin hit two for hree with three RBIs, including her sev- nth home run of the season. But, the Islanders’ star pitcher had an off night, sur rendering seven earned runs on eight hits in her six innings of work. While A&M also took the second game, the score was quite deceiving. In the bot tom of the first, the Aggies jumped out on top, scoring a run on two hits. After that. Islander pitcher Dani Darnel stonewalled the Aggies until the bottom of the sixth inning. Keeping the ball down. Darnel was able to induce several groundouts and pop ups as the Aggies could not get anything solid to hit. Darnel’s counterpart, junior pitcher Lindsay Wilhelmson, was just as stifling. Fresh off a no-hitter against Kansas, Wilhelmson effectively shut out the Islanders, allowing only one run during an Islander rally in the top of the seventh. Finally, in the bottom of the sixth, A&M broke through again against Darnel, scoring five runs to increase its lead to 6-1. Freshman pinch hitter Nicole Robinson, Gregory and Wilhelmson all came through with clutch RBIs to help the Aggies’ cause. Gregory has continued to be successful offensively after being named Big 12 Player of the Week two weeks ago. “I’ve just been working hard with my hitting,” Gregory said. “I feel like I’m hit ting my peak at the right time.” Corpus Christi Head Coach Missy Phillips-Dickerson said she was frustrated by her team’s performance. “We’ve been up and down all year, and unless we bring our ‘A’ game, we get beat like we did tonight,” she said. This weekend, the Aggies will again defend their home field as streaky Iowa State (16-22,4-7 Big 12) comes to College Station. The Cyclones are led by current Big 12 Player of the Week Katy Ruby, who hit three three-run homers in the Cyclones sweep of Baylor. “We know they keep upsetting people,” said Aggie Head Coach Jo Evans. “They’re having a good year having beaten No. 4 OU and Baylor. They never quit, and we can’t afford to take them lightly.” Saturday is Senior Day for the Aggie softball team, and before the first game of the doubleheader, the Aggies will honor their five senior athletes. The two games will begin at 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., respectively. ALISSA HOLLIMON • THE BATTALION Second baseman Adrian Gregory fields a ground ball. LIVAS • THE BATTALION (Junior Matt Alexander turns a double play on Tuesday night. By Michael Crow THE BATTALION When the Texas A&M baseball team hosts No. 21 Oklahoma State on Friday, both teams will enter the game on the heels of winning efforts. However, the two teams went about their recent wins in dif ferent manners. The No. 16 Aggies (30-11, 10-5 Big 12) used a bit of “Olsen Magic” to defeat a visiting University of Texas-Arlington team in the bottom of the 11th inning, 7-6. Meanwhile, the OSU Cowboys (24-11, 8-4 Big 12) were busy offensively in a 24-1 rout of Texas-Pan American. A&M’s extra-inning heroics came in the form of an RBI double off the bat of junior Erik Shindewolf. Moments before, jun ior pinch hitter Brian Bowie reached base on a single, and soph omore pitcher Logan Kensing then replaced him as a pinch runner. A sacrifice bunt from freshman Parker Dalton then set up Shindewolf’s game-winning hit. “It felt really good,” Shindewolf said. “Things weren’t really going our way in the beginning of the game, but it seemed like it started to change there at the end.” Shindewolf and senior short stop Matt Alexander had solid defensive outings for A&M. Prior to their two-run sixth inning, the Aggies had little suc cess against UTA starter Pierce Loveless. A&M Head Coach Mark Johnson said the left-hander defi nitely had his team confused in the game’s early innings. “We couldn’t get it going early,” he said. “Our rhythm was off on him. I thought the second time through (the batting order), we’d make a better adjustment, and we started getting hits.” The Aggies will surely need plenty of hits against an offense as strong as OSU’s. A&M’s offensive spark typically begins with its trio of juniors: Justin Ruggiano, Cory Patton and Scott Beerer. On Tuesday, Ruggiano was named the Big 12 Player of the Week, follow ing a week in which he went seven for 15 with three home runs. OSU third baseman Josh Fields had a home run of his own in the first inning of the Cowboys’ blowout victory of Texas-Pan American.
