THE BATTALION Wednesday, April 16, 2003
ALISSA HOLLIMON • THE BATTALION
A&M junior Lindsey Wilhelmson picks up one of her eight strikeouts in a
complete-game no-hitter against the Kansas Jayhawks last Sunday.
Softball
Continued from page 5
because each one is signifi
cant.”
The Aggies will have no
time to rest on their laurels,
however, as they will face a
young A&M - Corpus Christi
(27-14, 3-3 Big South) team
that is looking to come in and
spoil the Aggies’ return home.
For being such a young pro
gram, the Islanders have made
great progress, holding their
own against teams such as
Missouri, Texas Tech and
Baylor. The Islanders are led
by sophomore pitcher Sarah
Pauley who has been over
whelming against opposing
teams this year.
The Islanders should cer
tainly enter today’s double-
header well-rested, not having
played since April 9. Last
Saturday, they were scheduled
to host Texas A&M-Kingsville,
but the series was cancelled due
to a scheduling conflict
between the two teams.
The last competition the
Islanders saw was the
University of Texas-San
Antonio three days earlier.
A&M-Corpus Christi shut out
the visiting Roadrunners, 3-0,
in the first of two games before
dropping the second 4-2.
In the Islanders’ win, Pauley
struck out 16 batters, including
her 300th of the season.
In the series’ second game,
Dani Darnel pitched two
innings for the Islanders before
exiting the game. Pauley reap
peared in a relief role, adding
10 more strike outs, but she
was unable to hold on for the
lead. She fell to 16-11 on the
season with the loss.
A&M-Corpus Christi Head
Coach Missy Phillips
Dickerson said that Pauley
serves a vital role on her pitch
ing staff.
“Sarah Pauley is a very tal
ented pitcher, and we look to
her to anchor our pitching
staff,” she said. “A&M is a
very talented team and it will
be very important for us to
bring our ‘A’ game. We are a
very young team, but we would
like to establish a rivalry with
Texas A&M and beating them
would help establish that.”
A&M Head Coach Jo Evans
said she has been impressed
with the Islanders this season.
“They’ve got Sarah Pauley
who has a 0.52 ERA,” Evans
said. “Obviously she can really
bring it, and when she pitches
they have a chance to win.
Overall they’ve done a really
good job with a young pro
gram. It’s good to have a com
petitive midweek game like this
because it keeps us sharp.”
Today’s first game is sched
uled to begin at 5 p.m. and will
be followed by Game two at 7
p.m. After facing the Islanders,
the Aggies will re-enter confer
ence play as they host the Iowa
State Cyclones this weekend.
In addition, the Aggies will be
honoring the five seniors on
this year’s team for Senior
Night in a pregame ceremony
before playing Iowa State.
