It opens Friday. “I spent yesterday handing out postcards and buttons to peo ple in Times Square, and I’ve slapped our movie posters all over the city,” Fan said. After a pause, he adds: “You don’t really see Keanu Reeves on the street handing out things for 'The Matrix,’ do you?” In a cinematic landscape where Asian stars are mostly martial arts imports who karate- chop their way through action films, a gritty drama about Asian-American youths could be a tough sell to audiences unac customed to identifying with the community. So the team behind “Better Luck Tomorrow” has been hitting the pavement in big cities and small film festivals. “There is no support for Asian-American men in a socie ty that expects them to be the model minority,” says NaRhee Ahn, program director at the Asian-American Arts Alliance. “They get punished for that same stereotype—socially not adjust ed, not sexy, the guy who can’t get the girl.” “Better Luck Tomorrow” departs from the immigrant narrative of such movies as Director Justin Lin, left, and actor Roger Fan. advertise "Betterbl Tomorrow,” an independent movie about Asian-American youth. ! “The Joy Luck Club" (1993), putting its characters in the pressure-cooker of overachiev ing students in a California high school. “This isn’t to belittle (movies that just explore Asian- American) identity,” says Larry Jung, of the Coalition of Asian Pacifies in Entertainment. “But I want to see more range from Asian-Americans.” Asian-Americans make up 4.2 percent of the U.S. popula tion, according to the 2000 cen sus, but a Screen Actors Guild study from the same year shows that only 1.7 percent of all lead roles cast went to Asians/Pacific Islanders. “The characters of 'Better Luck Tomorrow’ are mindful of their heritage without being con sumed by it,” Jung says, “and, as a result, the film can explore other tensions more thcrught-pro- voking than race.” The four teenagers at the cen ter of “Better Luck Tomorrow” are perfectionist scholars by day. The s Venezui site bor WEB WATCHI www.refdesk.com As the slogan goes, Refdesk.com is the “sin gle best source for facts on the Net,” It may be a tall order, but it’s one the Web site fills admirably. The topics covered and the links provided are diverse and all-inclusive. From astrology to zoos, the Web site touches on various subjects. Scrolling through Refdesk.com provides the visitor with so much information that his head practically spins. The information is separated into clearly labeled sections and the layout is kept clean— like a real reference desk in a library. However, the section of categories is not ordered logically. Much of the Web site is focused on news, but instead of having all of the news items in one area, they are spread around the three-column layout in a random order. The Web site is also aimed primarily at American issues. Many of the links are for news around the world; however, more focus is placed on American issues. The site should devote more energy to foreign issues if it wants to maintain an all-inclusive persona. Nonetheless, the site stands up to its slogan. Refdesk.com contains information about many questions that an American might ask. It makes an excellent start page for any Internet experience.
