SPORTS THE BATTALION Collins Continued from page 7 mitted to A&M,” Collins said. “Even though this second injury could have been detrimental to my career as a catcher. Coach Evans stuck with me. She told me that she had committed to me once I committed to her, and she knew that 1 would get better.” As far as making the transi tion from Arizona to Texas, Evans and her staff have made College Station a home away from home for Collins, Debbie Collins said. “Selena has always been around a family atmosphere, and that was what she was looking for when she was trying to decide on a school,” she said. “She’s been able to confide in her coaches and teammates, which is something that is hard to find elsewhere.” Needless to say, the results speak for themselves in terms of Evans staying committed to Collins. Wednesday, April 9, 2003 In her first year, Collins came in and assumed a leading role on the team, making 51 starts and earning team MVP honors. Collins is now known as one of the Aggies’ toughest hit ters, evidenced when she broke the A&M home run record against Georgia earlier this year, and by her place on the watch list for the national softball player of the year. “Selena is a very driven play er, and she has never let her injuries get her down,” Evans said. “She doesn’t complain about her injuries or soreness. She has the competitive drive that most athletes would love to have, and that’s something you can’t teach or fake. That and her desire to come through in the clutch are what separate her from her competition.” Inevitably, Collins will have to think about life beyond the softball field. She has plans to get into television broadcasting. For now, though, Collins is focused on helping her team win the Big 12 and national championships. U n i X^Sversi ty We Need YOU!
